Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries we see in clinic. As pain and swelling begin to settle, it’s important to start rebuilding strength, balance and confidence through the ankle.

Today Lachie is demonstrating 3 exercises we commonly prescribe during the mid stage of ankle sprain rehab👇

1️⃣Single leg balance

- Helps to improve balance, stability and proprioception

- Retrains the body’s ability to react to changes in position

2️⃣Single leg calf raises

- Builds strength through the calf and ankle complex

- Important for running, walking and return to sport

3️⃣Heel walks

- Strengthens the muscles that cross over the front of the ankle

- Helps to improve ankle control and overall lower limb function

Ankle sprains are an incredibly common sporting and everyday injury. Early rehab is essential in helping to restore movement and improve stability and function.

Here are three exercises we use in clinic to help our patients in the early stages of ankle sprain rehabilitation 👇

1️⃣Double leg calf raises

- Helps rebuild strength through the calf muscles

- Assists with walking, stairs and returning to daily activity

2️⃣Single leg balance

- Helps to improve balance and proprioception

- Important for restoring ankle stability and reducing re injury risk

3️⃣Banded ankle movements

- Works the ankle in its 4 key movements (inversion, eversion, plantarflexion and dorsiflexion)

- Helps to improve ankle strength and control through different ranges of movement

Early stage rehab focuses on restoring confidence in the ankle and gradually reintroducing load and movement as symptoms allow 💪

- Challenges strength one leg at a time

- Increases hamstring demand in the long lever position
