A Special Surrogacy Journey at WGHG 🧡

On 19 July, West Gippsland Healthcare Group's Maternity Nurse Unit had the privilege of supporting a very special birth, helping intended parents Adriana and Nathan welcome their beautiful baby girl, Frankie, with the support of surrogate Janelle.

Leading up to the birth, WGHG's Maternity Unit Manager, Liz, worked closely with both Janelle and Adriana to ensure a clear plan was in place and that everyone felt supported throughout the process.

"We met with both the surrogate and intended mother to discuss expectations, consent processes and plans for the birth and postnatal stay. Our focus was ensuring everyone felt informed, prepared and supported, while creating the best possible environment for bonding between the intended parents and their baby," she said.

Janelle's journey to becoming a surrogate began several years ago.
"I really wanted to help someone become parents and experience all the feelings I have as a mum," she said.

Janelle said seeing Adriana and Nathan become parents has been incredibly rewarding.
"Watching them with Frankie gives me the warmest feeling, knowing what I have done for them," Janelle said.

Adriana praised the care provided by the maternity team throughout the surrogacy journey.
"We had a fantastic experience at WGHG. Surrogacy births don't happen every day, and the team took extra care of us throughout the whole process. They looked after us and ensured Janelle was cared for on all levels. The support we received was incredible," she said.

Reflecting on life with Frankie, Adriana shared:
"Life with Frankie has been truly amazing! She has been the missing piece in our lives, and we are enjoying seeing her grow each day," she said.

From everyone at WGHG, congratulations to Adriana, Nathan, Janelle and baby Frankie. Thank you for allowing us to be part of such a special journey and for sharing your story with our community. 💙

On Friday, our staff at WGHG came together to celebrate Aged Care Worker Day, recognising the dedication, compassion and care our aged care teams provide to residents and their families every day.

To mark the occasion, staff enjoyed an afternoon tea at Andrews House to celebrate our aged care team and all they do.

We are proud to celebrate our aged care team and thank them for the vital role they play in supporting the health, wellbeing and quality of life of those in their care.

To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, we spoke with Leanne about what her role as a Lactation Consultant means to her.

"I feel very fortunate to support women throughout their breastfeeding journey, helping them achieve their goals and being there for new families. It's an amazing feeling."

Leanne also highlighted a common misconception about breastfeeding:

"Many new mums think breastfeeding comes naturally and easily, but it's actually a learned skill. Every mum's experience is different, and each breastfeeding journey is unique."

As a Lactation Consultant at WGHG, Leanne provides support to families across our Postnatal Unit, Special Care Nursery and Breastfeeding Clinic, as well as throughout the hospital whenever needed.

Recently, the Breastfeeding Clinic received this heartfelt feedback from Madelaine.

"I just wanted to express how truly grateful I am for all your knowledge and support throughout my breastfeeding journey so far. I can honestly say that I would not have made it this long breastfeeding if it hadn't been for your help, answering all my questions and finding solutions to the problems I was having."

We are incredibly grateful to have dedicated professionals like Leanne and our maternity team supporting local families every day.

This week, our staff from the Breastfeeding Clinic and Maternity Ward came together to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. 🧡

WGHG Lactation Consultant, Leanne, delivered a presentation on Breastfeeding Aversion Response to our Maternity ward, sharing case studies and practical learning points to help staff better support and inform new mums experiencing breastfeeding challenges.

To mark the occasion, one of our talented midwives baked special cookies for staff to enjoy, while displays throughout West Gippsland Hospital showcased case studies and valuable feedback from local families.

Our onsite Breastfeeding Clinic at WGHG is available to support all new mums on their breastfeeding journey. No referral is needed, and our team is here to help whenever support is needed.

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting a Supertee packing event with the team from Reflect Consulting.

Thanks to the wonderful fundraising efforts of Reflect Consulting, we have been able to provide our paediatric patients with medical-grade garments to wear while in hospital. These specifically designed Supertees allow staff easy access to medical lines while helping children feel like superheroes, ballerinas, and astronauts.

The packs were assembled by Reflect Consulting and WGHG staff, with each box including a supportive note of encouragement. Supertee Operations Co-ordinator Terry introduced the significance of the initiative and shared the personal story behind the 'Supertees' journey via a live presentation from Sydney, before leading the packing demonstration.

Since receiving our first donation of Supertees late last year, we have been able to bring a little smile to patients' faces during times when they may not be feeling their best.

Pete Smith from Reflect Consulting explained why they chose to support this wonderful initiative:

“Our decision to get involved with Supertee and WGHG is close to our hearts because we love kids and feel deeply for those who are going through medical challenges. Members of the Reflect team have had firsthand experience with their children requiring long-term or repeated hospital visits" he said.

"When we became aware of Supertee as a way to make hospital stays easier for children, families, and nursing staff, we were immediately 100% committed" he said.

Thank you, Drouin Op Shop! 🧡

We recently had the opportunity to visit the Drouin Op Shop to thank our dedicated team of volunteers for their generous donation of $150,000 to the West Gippsland Healthcare Group. These funds, raised through their sales efforts over the years, have now allowed us to purchase the following essential items, helping us deliver quality care to our region.

• A Tonopen for the Emergency Department to assist in the assessment and treatment of glaucoma.
• A SmileyScope for our younger Emergency Department patients, helping to distract and comfort children while procedures are being performed.
• Two new triage chairs for the examination of incoming patients in the Emergency Department.
• Seven new treatment chairs for the Haemodialysis Unit.
• An Isolette 800 to provide specialised care for newborn babies in Maternity.
• Two vital signs machines for District Nursing and the Infusion Clinic.

These purchases will have a significant impact on the care and comfort of our patients.
We are grateful to the entire team whose commitment and hard work continue to make the Drouin Op Shop the wonderful success that it is.
