The guidelines for managing asthma in Australia have changed.

For years, many of us relied on our blue reliever puffer (salbutamol or SABA— Ventolin, Asmol, Zemperon) as the main asthma medication.

The updated Australian Asthma Handbook now says this isn't enough.

Here's what's new for everyone aged 12 and over with asthma:

🚫 SABA-only treatment (blue puffer alone) is no longer recommended
✅ All adults and adolescents should have access to an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)
✅ Anti-Inflammatory Reliever (AIR) therapy a single combination inhaler used as needed is now a preferred option
✅ Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART) one inhaler used both daily and for symptom relief is the other preferred approach

Why the shift? Asthma is inflammation in the airways, not just wheeze. A blue puffer relieves symptoms for a few hours but doesn't treat what's causing them. Frequent blue puffer use is linked to a higher risk of serious asthma attacks and sadly, preventable deaths.

If you've only got a blue puffer at home, it's time to book a review with your GP for a review of your asthma action plan.

May is National Asthma Awareness month.

Now’s a great time to check in on your family’s asthma essentials:

✅ Check the expiry date on all puffers
✅ Check the dose counter
✅ Don’t forget the back-up puffers kept at daycare, kinder or school
✅ Finally make sure spacers are cleaned regularly and valves are in good condition

Australian asthma guidelines have also been updated recently, so it’s worth booking in with your GP to review your Asthma Action Plan, especially before winter peaks.
