When we were impatient and paid the price!
When my son had done some Uni and was going on a 6month working holiday to South America. I had family over for Pizza the night he was leaving, had most things prepped well and then!
I did not have the plates out to put the pizzas on, pizzas in the oven so I became in an instant a dipstick. I ran in the house and as i was transitioning from the carpet to the tiles already moving to turn into the kitchen, my legs went! I hit fluid on the tiles and went down as I was rotating into the kitchen causing a spiral load through my wrist with the resulting "snap, crackle and pop"
A few profanities escaped my mouth at the point of impact and having broken my arm twice before I had a good idea as to what had just happened. I had a sling put on my arm to brace it, sat on the couch with a beer whilst I got my head around what I had just done.
My nephew a very good cook took over Pizza duties, someone else got the plates and we continued.
I knew going to hospital straight away would not achieve anything other than confirm that I did a really good job this time. I was dropped off at 10pm or so to RPH emergency and began the process. The Triage nurse tried to handle my wrist to my displeasure, soon into the treatment area and x-rays confirmed the worst.
The registrar reset my wrist and had it plastered, the orthopedic lady came around an hour or so later and did the same, at the end suggesting that with my job surgery was the best option.
Saw the surgeon on Wednesday and operated on Thursday morning, all went well.
6 weeks in a plaster and time to re-hab. I was told that I would probably not get full range of motion back within my Right wrist ever, but with good work applying scar tissue massage to the area as soon as the cast was off my range may be only a couple of degrees off my left side.
Essentially if we work at things and find people to help us with the right knowledge, anything is possible.
I went against something that my parents told me when I was young and paid a price for it! "Dont run inside!"
