Nothing p!sses me off more than this. 🤯🤯🤯

It is noones duty, noones business, noones right to tell you how to live to manage your weight…unless you ask them for advice. Even then, make sure it’s someone who knows what they’re talking about!

Trust me, I’m someone who supports people daily with body image related issues and unsolicited diet advice sits at the top of the list of things that spiral people. šŸŒ€

Feel free to tell advice giver to shut their trap. Be as polite or as rude as you’d like to be…because giving advice about weight management that you didn’t ask for is rude.

How to fill my cup…

Fill my brain = fill my cup.
Spend time with friends = fill my cup.
I totally acknowledge the overuse of ā€œumā€ and ā€œdamnā€ but I’m in a rush to see my friends so no editing here!

I’m a dietitian and I help people with lots of different goals, concerns, health issues and lifestyles.

I’ve never given the exact advice to two different people… because no two people have exactly the same needs or capacity BUT…

Eating regularly is the only thing I would advise everyone to do. No skipping meals, no delaying first meal of the day (a polite way to say fasting).

Why?

āļø It’s hard to meet your nutrition needs while not eating enough.
āļø Your body appreciates predictable patterns and regular food intake (about every 3-4 hours)
āļø Gut function, emotional regulation and cognition all do better with a regular feed!

So if you want to feel great, think sharp, poo regularly, and manage your emotions, eating regularly is #1 priority.

Next question, what do you need to eat? Well, that’s slightly different for everyone…

Finding out I have ADHD has been an absolute game changer. Here’s why…

ADHD is not a scapegoat for not opening my mail, or impulsive shoe purchases, losing absolutely everything, forgetting appointments and perpetually running late BUT it explains alot.

And knowing why helps me manage all of this without the guilt and shame for not being able to do the simplest things. It’s helped me build systems that work with my brain.

One day, a while after I’d completed my kids assessments, I walked into my GPs office burnt out and bawling my eyes out and he gently said ā€œI think it’s time we addressed the ADHDā€. What a legend.

How’d you find out you’ve got ADHD too?

How did this lil ADHDer finally get out of the house on time? ā°

This is not easy for me to do. I can’t explain it. One moment I have all the time in the world, the next I’m late.

This has some big impacts on my day: I’m stressed. The kids are stressed. I’m irritable. The kids are irritable. I’m trying to get a kid to a train station on time without losing my licence. I get into the clinic and I already feel like I’ve done a days work. I feel like s**t that my kids started their day off feeling s**tty. I spend too long thinking about that.

But in a household where executive function is challenged and we all struggle to get out the house on time and in a winning mood, how do we fix this??

At the end of last term, I was like something has to change. This isn’t working for us at all. So I’ve become a little systems queen.

āļø I set up a family app so everyone knows what they’ve got on for the day, what uniforms they need and what we’re eating for breakfast. Decisions already made. No need to use mental energy here.

āļø I’ve aligned my breakfast with the kids. I have toastie on the day my son has a toastie and my daughter has cereal and milk. The other day, her and I have oats and my son has cereal and milk. Decisions made. Time saved by not acting like a chef.

āļø I’ve given up some jobs in the morning. Getting out of the house is the priority. Any side quest doesn’t help the mission. Less side quests = Kelly can get to work on time and not feel like she’s been caught in a windstorm.

āļø Bags aren’t packed the day before, but we know where everything is at least. Lunches are partially done and the kids can do the rest. Knowing where your socks are helps with emotional regulation! Trust me!

I don’t expect this will always go smoothly but today it did, and knowing that it did today is my motivation for keeping up these systems.
