More consistent use of end-to-end hospital flow management tools is now part of a National Audit Office (NAO) recommendation for NHS trusts.

The report is clear about the need. Since 2021 hospital doctor numbers are up 34% and MRI and CT scans are up by around half, while attendances waiting over 4 hours rose from 5 to 7 million between 2021-22 and 2025-26. Despite more resources in the ED - pressure and wait times persist.

The NAO report points beyond the ED to inpatient bed availability and delayed discharge as key modifiable factors behind poor patient flow, with delayed discharge accounting for 14.7% of all bed days in April 2026 alone.

Care teams cannot manage what they cannot see, and the NAO found there is no national picture of how patients move through a hospital after admission.

94% of NHS acute trusts now have an EPR in place (Digital Health, 2025). But digitising a patient record does not digitise patient flow. The report also states that not every trust with an EPR is using it to track flow, and in our experience this challenge is common, as many EPRs were not designed to manage the challenges with flow.

That is where a real-time patient flow platform comes in, and this is what the NAO is calling for. Miya Precision brings patient status, clinical history, bed availability and discharge blockers into a single view for the whole organisation, working with existing EPRs and other systems already in place to surface the information needed.

Trusts do not need to wait for a national picture to build their own and start acting on what it shows.

⚡The focus was on AI at last month’s ANDHealth Unfiltered conference, where Kate Quirke, Alcidion Group Managing Director and CEO, presented a keynote on the realities of building, certifying and deploying in healthcare.

This was a practical look at what it takes to move a capability from pilot into production, and then to scale it across international health systems.

- Data readiness comes before AI readiness
- Successful projects begin with the problem, not the AI
- AI tools must fit seamlessly into existing clinical workflows. Extra logins or duplicated work will halt adoption before it even gets off the ground.

🏥 Uncomplicated diverticulitis puts more than 19,000 Australians in a hospital bed each year. New trial evidence suggests many of them don't need one.

A clinical trial published in the ANZ Journal of Surgery in June found that selected patients with acute uncomplicated diverticulitis were able to be safely managed at home, using remote patient monitoring technology underpinned by the Miya Precision platform.

The trial found that 93% of the selected patients completed treatment without crossing over to inpatient care, with zero major complications. Patient experience was markedly better than conventional admission, with 88% rating their care as excellent compared with 40% of those admitted, and 88% reporting their healthcare needs were always met compared with 47%.

The pathway was delivered through Sydney Virtual Hospital, formerly RPA Virtual, which has supported virtual care for over 85,000 patients since 2020.

With advances in technology, more and more acute conditions are able to be managed at home safely. In order to successfully scale the pathways healthcare systems need to invest in the supporting infrastructure: what platform is used to enable a virtual pathway to make it safe, governable and scalable.

Remote monitoring without escalation logic is data without action. Video consultation without EMR integration is contact without clinical context.

For anyone responsible for inpatient capacity, admission avoidance or virtual care delivery, the whitepaper sets out the five conditions the trial demonstrates are needed to do this safely.
