Did you know that Developmental Language Disorder affects around 2 children in every classroom?
DLD is a hidden disability that impacts how a person understands and uses language. Children with DLD may have difficulty: • understanding instructions
• learning new words
• telling stories
• answering questions
• expressing their ideas clearly
• following conversations
DLD is lifelong, but with the right support, children and young people with DLD can thrive.
Speech pathologists play an important role in helping children build communication, learning and social participation skills.
Awareness matters because many children with DLD are misunderstood as “not listening”, “shy” or “lazy” when they are actually working much harder to process language.

Cluttering is a fluency difference where speech may sound fast, uneven, or disorganised, making messages harder to follow. It’s not about not knowing what to say, but how speech is produced in real time.
Common signs of cluttering may include: • Rapid and/or irregular speech rate
• Reduced speech clarity or words sounding “jumbled together”
• Mazes or revisions (e.g. changing words mid-sentence, false starts)
• Disorganised language or difficulty sequencing ideas clearly
• Reduced awareness of how their speech sounds to others
💡 This year’s theme focuses on improving recognition of cluttering across different speaking situations and increasing awareness so people are identified and supported earlier.
👩‍⚕️ Speech pathologists help by identifying cluttering, supporting clearer and more organised communication, and building practical strategies to improve confidence and understanding.
🌍 Awareness matters because cluttering is often missed or misunderstood, impacting participation at school, work, and socially.
💛 Different communication styles deserve understanding and support.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for speech. Children with apraxia know what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty sending the right messages to their mouth to make the sounds clearly.
Early identification and targeted speech therapy can make a meaningful difference in building communication skills, confidence, and participation in everyday life.
Let’s raise awareness, support families, and celebrate the hard work of children finding their voice.

Things in my bag that just make sense as a paediatric speechie 👜
From mirrors for visual feedback, to whiteboards for building words and sentences, to bubbles for engagement and turn-taking… every item has a purpose.
These simple tools help children understand what their mouth is doing, practise new skills, stay motivated, and build confidence in their communication.
And while sessions are important, what happens at home matters just as much. Practice sheets and small, consistent moments of practice can make a big difference.
Sometimes it’s not about fancy resources, it’s about using the right tools in the right way 💬
What would be in your speechie bag?
