Cluttering is a fluency difference where speech may sound fast, uneven, or disorganised, making messages harder to follow. It’s not about not knowing what to say, but how speech is produced in real time.
Common signs of cluttering may include: • Rapid and/or irregular speech rate
• Reduced speech clarity or words sounding “jumbled together”
• Mazes or revisions (e.g. changing words mid-sentence, false starts)
• Disorganised language or difficulty sequencing ideas clearly
• Reduced awareness of how their speech sounds to others
💡 This year’s theme focuses on improving recognition of cluttering across different speaking situations and increasing awareness so people are identified and supported earlier.
👩⚕️ Speech pathologists help by identifying cluttering, supporting clearer and more organised communication, and building practical strategies to improve confidence and understanding.
🌍 Awareness matters because cluttering is often missed or misunderstood, impacting participation at school, work, and socially.
💛 Different communication styles deserve understanding and support.
