Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), often called kneecap mal-tracking, is one of the most common causes of knee pain we see in clinic. Think of it as a bit like a train running slightly off it's tracks.
It typically presents as a dull ache around or behind the kneecap—especially with:
✔️ Running or jumping
✔️ Squatting or stairs
✔️ Sitting for long periods
🔍 What causes it?
PFPS is usually not just one issue, but a combination of:
• Muscle imbalances (especially quads + glutes)
• Overuse without enough recovery
• Poor biomechanics or alignment
• Previous trauma (e.g. fall onto the knee)
⚠️ Common symptoms:
• Aching pain around the kneecap
• Grinding or clicking (crepitus)
• Mild swelling
✅ The good news?
Nearly all cases can be significantly improved with Physiotherapy.
At Regenerate Physiotherapy, treatment may include:
✔️ Activity modification
✔️ Taping to reduce stress on the kneecap
✔️ Targeted strengthening
✔️ Soft tissue release & stretching (ITB/lateral quad)
✔️ Biomechanical correction (including orthotics if needed)
📅 Most people improve within 5–6 sessions over ~6 weeks, depending on severity.
