Why would an NDIS OT cook with a client? 👩🏻‍🍳

Sometimes people see us cooking with a client and ask:

“Do OTs actually teach cooking too?” 😂

Yes — because cooking is a great way to practise real-life skills.

Even before we start cooking, there is already a lot happening.

We might plan what to make, check what ingredients are already at home, write a shopping list, or look through the Woolworths website together to find items and compare prices.

Once we start cooking, we can also see how the client manages things like:

Can they follow a recipe?
Do they remember what comes next?
Can they organise multiple steps?
What happens when something doesn’t go to plan?

Kitchen safety is another important part — using knives, handling hot pans and water, checking whether food is cooked properly, and remembering to turn appliances off.

If something goes wrong, I usually won’t step in straight away. Instead, I might ask:

“What do you think you could do now?”

The aim is to help the client practise thinking through the problem and becoming less reliant on someone else giving them the answer.

So cooking sessions are never just about learning one recipe.

They can support planning, time management, problem solving, safety awareness, fine motor skills and overall independence in daily life.

The long-term goal is simple: for the client to feel more confident doing these things on their own. 💛

🌱 Child Developmental Milestones

We often hear parents ask:

“Is this normal?”
“Why can other kids already do this?”
“Is my child falling behind?”

As OTs, developmental milestones are something we do look at. They give us a general idea of what skills children may be developing at different ages — things like movement, communication, play, social skills, self-care and learning.

But we always remind parents:

Milestones are a guide, not a report card 🤍

Every child develops at their own pace.

Some children talk earlier.
Some children are more confident with movement.
Some children need a little more time, support and practice.

Rather than comparing your child with others, it can be more helpful to look at:

✨ Are they making progress?
✨ Are they learning new skills over time?
✨ Are they able to join in daily activities and play?
✨ Do they seem to be growing in their own way?

If your child seems behind in a few different areas, or you keep having that feeling of “something doesn’t feel quite right”, it’s okay to ask for help 🌿

Early advice doesn’t mean something is wrong.
It simply means we can better understand your child and support them in the right way.

Every child is unique.
Growth is not a race 💛

⚠️ New NDIS plan approved, but funding seems unavailable?

In recent months, many families have been asking:
👉 “A new NDIS plan was just approved. Can therapy start immediately?”

👉 “The plan amount looks high, so why can’t all services be booked at once?”

Here is the key change 👇
From 19 May 2025, most new and reassessed NDIS plans no longer release the full budget upfront.

👉 Funding is now released in stages (Funding Periods).
💰 What are “Funding Periods”?

In simple terms:
❌ Before: The full budget was available immediately
✅ Now: Funding is released in segments (usually every 3 months)

Typical release patterns:
• Therapy / Capacity Building → Usually quarterly (every 3 months)
• Home & Living → Often monthly
• Assistive Technology (AT) & Home Modifications → Still released in full

⚠️ Important:
👉 Only the current funding period amount can be used, not the total annual plan budget.
😵‍💫 Why can’t therapy always start immediately with a new plan?

This is becoming very common:
• A new plan is approved
• Families plan to start:
◦ OT assessment
◦ Reports
◦ Ongoing therapy
• But the first funding period is limited

👉 Assessment + report fees may use up the first funding period
👉 No funding left for therapy until the next period
👉 Families may need to self-fund temporarily 💸

⚠️ Result:
Not everything can be done at once. Priority planning is now essential.

📌 Next post: Practical tips on how to plan services and maximise funding under the new NDIS funding period system.
