The last two weeks have reminded us of something important.

Behind every support worker, coordinator, manager, and clinician is a human being.

As professionals, we’re expected to remain calm, make difficult decisions, advocate for those in our care, and navigate incredibly complex situations. We do this because we genuinely care. But that doesn’t mean we’re unaffected by what we experience.

The emotional weight of supporting people through crisis and trauma is real.

One of the hardest parts of our role is recognising when someone needs specialist clinical intervention and working tirelessly to seek that support. While collaboration is always our goal, there are times when accessing timely clinical guidance can be incredibly challenging. It can leave frontline teams carrying uncertainty while continuing to ensure the person’s safety and wellbeing.

Advocating isn’t always easy. Sometimes it means asking difficult questions, having uncomfortable conversations, and continuing to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. That can be emotionally exhausting.

There are times when we’re reminded that we cannot fix broken systems; we can only keep showing up, raising our voices, and doing the very best we can with the influence we have

Even as professionals, we are human. We feel the heartbreak, the uncertainty, the frustration, and the victories right alongside the people we support.

As the meaning of “Esperanza” represents; the power of hope. Hope is about continuing to show up and advocating for people that have never been heard.

We’ll keep showing up. We’ll keep caring. And we’ll keep advocating for the people who need it most.

The most powerful thing you can do as a professional is have self awareness of your emotions. You are not immune to emotions. What defines us is not the absence of emotion, it’s our ability to recognise it.
