Happy Dental Awareness Week! πŸ¦·πŸ’™

What a fantastic morning with the amazing Brisbane MyRehab team!Carol had the pleasure of presenting to a wonderful group of allied health professionals, and what a great turnout it was! There was plenty of discussion & a shared passion for improving the health & wellbeing of the people we support.

We chatted about everything oral health... & then some! πŸ˜„ From chewing, swallowing, dry mouth, oral hygiene, aspiration risk, sensory considerations & why the mouth really is the gateway to overall health. There truly is so much that happens "in between"!

One of the best parts of the day was seeing so many different professions come together, asking questions, sharing ideas, & recognising just how important collaboration is in achieving better outcomes for our clients.

Thank you to the Brisbane MyRehab team for the warm welcome, your enthusiasm & for making oral health part of the conversation. We love every opportunity to work alongside our allied health colleagues because together we really can make a lasting difference if we work together. 🩡✨

Today reminded us that a smile is understood in any language. From the moment the doors opened families kept arriving. There was messy play, laughter, curiosity & plenty of smiles. We joined in too, getting just as messy alongside our littlest community members, because some of the best learning happens through play.

While the children explored, we had the privilege of providing early oral health care, stabilising active tooth decay for a number of children & having meaningful conversations with families about oral health. Every discussion was tailored to the needs of each family, providing culturally safe, respectful & appropriate care in a welcoming environment.

A heartfelt thank you Marian & the wonderful team at 54 Reasons Inala for creating such an inclusive space where every family feels valued & supported. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon. πŸ’™πŸ¦·πŸŒπŸͺ₯

Thank you to everyone who was involved in MDPA26 Driving Change Together. 🦷✨ A special thank you to the sponsors & to Shida & Jacquie for delivering such a well-organised conference. I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn & network with colleagues who share a passion for bringing oral healthcare to communities through mobile dental services. πŸ™πŸ¦·πŸ’™πŸŒˆ

The little things are often the biggest victories. Over the past couple of years, we’ve been gently supporting Holly on her oral health journey, one tiny step at a time. Through patience, trust, play, sensory exploration & always working at Holly’s pace, we slowly introduced the vibration of an electric toothbrush, toothpaste, gentle touch around her face & mouth & eventually toothbrushing itself.

Last week, Holly simply picked up her toothbrush & wanted to brush her teeth at her desk… like it was no big deal! She happily accepted touch, chose her toothpaste, & confidently used the electric toothbrush.

To many, this may seem like a small moment, but to us it’s a huge milestone. It reflects years of building trust, respecting Holly’s sensory needs, celebrating every little win & never rushing the process. We are so incredibly proud of you, Holly. πŸ’™ Keep brushing like the superstar you are; you inspire us🌟πŸͺ₯

Today Adam & I had lots of fun practising puffing our cheeks outπŸ₯³πŸ’¨ This playful activity helps strengthen the cheek & lip muscles needed to keep water in the mouth during rinsing, while also supporting chewing & speech πŸ‘…For some adults with additional support needs, learning to rinse can be quite challenging. Turning therapy into a game with party blowers makes practising these skills fun, engaging & full of smiles & laughter! πŸ₯³πŸ’¨πŸŽ‰πŸ¦·

πŸ’™πŸŽΈπŸŽΆ Morning shenanigans with Simon & Adam! πŸŽΆπŸŽΈπŸ’™ After conquering our bathroom routines, it was time for the important stuff... fun! πŸ˜„ Simon may be non-verbal & has vision impairment, but one thing is clear, he knows exactly what he likes & that's Coldplay! 🎡 As soon as the music started, the room came alive. Meanwhile, Adam & I took our roles very seriously as the world's greatest backup air guitarists (according to us anyway πŸ˜‚πŸŽΈ). These moments are a beautiful reminder that connection comes in many forms. Sometimes it's not about words, it's about music, joy & sharing a moment together. ❀️

πŸ’™βœ¨ Yesterday was one of those days that remind us why we never give up. βœ¨πŸ’™

After more than 30 play-based oral health therapy sessions, this amazing little guy allowed an electric toothbrush into his mouth for the very first time. For many children, this may seem like a small step. But for children living with ASD, with significant sensory sensitivities, & oral aversions, this is a truly remarkable achievement. This milestone did not happen overnight. It was built slowly through relationship building, trust, repetition, patience, gentle guidance & countless opportunities to practise without pressure.

A few years ago, we asked a wise school principal how we could help children with complex needs develop important daily living skills when progress sometimes feels so slow. She replied: "There is only one way to eat an elephant... one bite at a time."
Those words could not be truer.

We are incredibly proud of this little guy's courage, determination & willingness to keep trying. Moments like these remind us that meaningful progress is rarely about giant leaps; it is about small, consistent steps taken over time. Ending our week with a little happy dance. πŸͺ₯πŸ‘„πŸ’ƒπŸ•ΊπŸ’™
