Stay ahead of flu and RSV this winter 🤧

Winter can be challenging for many families in our community, particularly young children, older adults, and people living with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

Free influenza vaccination and RSV immunisation programs are available through WA Government initiatives for eligible Western Australians.

As flu and RSV circulate this winter, speak with your GP, pharmacist or immunisation provider to find out what protection is available for you and your family.

By age four, Oliver had already been admitted to hospital several times with breathing difficulties.

Living with asthma, severe allergies and recurring chest infections brought uncertainty to everyday life for Oliver and his family.

Through specialist care, education and support from Respiratory Care WA, Oliver gained the confidence to understand his asthma, manage his triggers and take control of his health.

Today he's thriving in volleyball, athletics and music. 🏐🏃‍♂️🎵🙌

At just three months old, Kayden was rushed to hospital struggling to breathe. Years of hospital visits, steroid treatments and sleepless nights followed.

When Kayden and his sister Maddie attended a Respiratory Care WA community outreach session, things started to change.

They received the right diagnosis, learned how to use their puffers correctly and were given personalised asthma management plans.

For the first time, their family felt confident they had the knowledge and support to manage their children's asthma.

For many people, winter weather can trigger asthma symptoms.

Common winter triggers include:

No two days are the same for our Community Outreach Coordinator, Melanie.

One day she’s delivering education in the community. The next, she’s providing diagnostic testing and support that can change a person’s health journey.

Through her work, Melanie sees the gaps in care that leave vulnerable families without timely support, education and diagnosis. She also sees the difference it makes when those gaps are closed.

No family should have to navigate childhood asthma alone.

Yet too often, children with asthma fall between hospital, specialist and GP care, leaving families to manage a complex system on their own.

That's why Respiratory Care WA's Children's Respiratory Hubs were created, bringing together specialist expertise and community support to improve access to coordinated respiratory care for children across WA.

In a new Medical Forum article, paediatric respiratory and sleep specialist Dr Stephen Oo and our CEO Rael Rivers share the story behind the first pilot hub and the growing demand for community-based asthma care.

For Ballardong Noongar siblings Kayden and Maddie, respiratory outreach through Arche Health - Aboriginal Health Team and Respiratory Care WA gave their family the support and answers they had been missing for years, in a place where they felt heard.

🖤💛❤️ Meet Ballardong Noongar brother and sister, Kayden and Maddie, our ambassadors for this year’s Tax Appeal, living on Wadjuk Noongar Boodja.

From a very young age, both experienced breathing difficulties and were often too unwell to fully enjoy school, daycare and time with friends. Frequent hospital visits, steroids and sleepless nights became part of family life.

Everything changed after attending a free outreach clinic through Respiratory Care WA and Arche Health - Aboriginal Health Team where the family finally received the education, support and the correct diagnosis they had been missing.

Today, we love hearing that Kayden and Maddie are breathing easier, sleeping better and simply enjoying being kids again. 💙
