📌 Understanding the California Proposition 65 Warning If you see a Proposition 65 warning on your supplement, it is not a sign that the product is unsafe. Here is a quick breakdown of what this label actually means:
Proposition 65 is a California law passed in 1986. It requires businesses to provide warnings if a product contains even trace amounts of certain chemicals or naturally occurring elements.
Many high-quality supplements use natural, plant-based ingredients grown in the earth (like herbs, greens, and minerals). Because elements like lead naturally exist in soil, plants absorb trace amounts as they grow.
Unbelievably strict limits: California’s warning threshold for lead is 0.5 micrograms per day. To put that in perspective, this is roughly 150 times stricter than the daily limits set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Everyday comparison: Because California’s limits are so low, a normal serving of organic spinach, Brussels sprouts, or a glass of tap water would actually require a Prop 65 warning if they were packaged and sold.
Why nationwide? Most companies print the warning on all of their packaging rather than creating separate, expensive labels just for the state of California.
The Bottom Line: A Prop 65 warning is a “right to know” law, not a safety warning. It simply means the product contains a trace amount of an element that is common in nature.
