Recent reports have highlighted the pressures some optometrists are experiencing in high-volume clinical environments. Regardless of where they practise, every optometrist enters the profession with the same goal: to provide the highest standard of care for their patients.

We hope the current discussion leads to positive change across the profession, giving all optometrists the time, professional autonomy and support needed to deliver the care Australians deserve.

At the same time, it's important for patients to understand that not all eye examinations are the same.

Consultation time, clinical experience, available technology and the scope of testing can vary significantly between practices. These differences can be particularly important for people with conditions such as keratoconus, dry eye disease, glaucoma, macular disease or complex vision concerns, where a brief routine examination may not be enough.

At Westmead Eyes Optometrists, our philosophy has always been simple:

• Investigate thoroughly.
• Explain clearly.
• Recommend care based on each patient's individual needs.

We believe eye care should never be rushed.

Patients should feel comfortable asking:

• How much time is allocated for my appointment?
• What testing is being recommended, and why?
• Does the practitioner have experience managing my condition?
• Are there different treatment options available?

Choosing an optometrist shouldn't be based solely on convenience or the lowest advertised price. Your eyesight is important, and you deserve the time, attention and clinical expertise to make informed decisions about your eye health.

👁️ “Too complex” doesn’t mean untreatable

We recently managed a patient with keratoconus and bilateral corneal grafts who was only achieving 6/12 vision with previous lenses.

Using 3D ocular surface mapping, we designed one of the most complex scleral lenses we’ve ever made:

~8.3mm sagittal depth
18.5mm diameter
Decentered optics

👉 Final result: 6/7 and 6/6 vision with improved comfort

Earlier this week was World Keratoconus Day, a reminder of the challenges faced by those living with keratoconus, and the ongoing innovation helping patients see more clearly and comfortably.

Kevin is currently in Japan visiting Menicon’s laboratory, R&D centre, and production facilities, meeting with lens fitting experts and researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region. The discussions have focused on advances in rigid and scleral lens design, as well as lens care and cleaning systems, including Progent and peroxide-based solutions, which are essential for maintaining comfort, safety, and long term eye health for patients with keratoconus.

It’s inspiring to see how much science and precision goes into every stage of lens development,!all aimed at improving vision and quality of life for our patients back home.
