This simple diagram outlines the Dual Process model, one of the theoretical frameworks I use in grief therapy with my lovely clients.

The "oscillation" between a loss focus and a restoration focus may feel like "ups and downs" but is actually a useful way to process deep grief. A personalised balance between the two types of coping can assist as you move forward with (not move on from) the central focus of your loss.

Friends and family are great, but it's not always possible to really open up and explore personal issues with them in a focused way. Loved ones may inadvertently invalidate your feelings, give (not so helpful) advice, see things differently or even shut you down - mostly due to their own discomfort/uncertainty on how to help.

In times like this, words feel small. Our community is grieving the loss of Aidan Becker, someone whose life was defined by his generosity and protective instinct - a person who chose to help another, even when it cost them everything.

When we lose someone who acted with such courage and compassion, the grief is not just personal; it becomes collective. We feel it in our communities, our conversations and in our quiet moments of reflection. It reminds us how deeply connected we are.

Tonight we mourned Aidan's life together. We hold space for his beautiful family, friends and everyone whose heart feels heavy. We honor an exceptionally important life that showed us the very best of humanity - the instinct to help, to care, to step bravely and selflessly forward when someone needed it most.

Let's remember that goodness, carry it forward and take care of one another in the days ahead. 💔
