🗣️ October is AAC Awareness Month! 🗣️
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. “Augmentative” means to support communication, like when we text or point to get our message across. “Alternative” refers to replacing speech entirely, like using a communication device or iPad.
There are 3 main types of AAC:
💬 No Tech – Using gestures, facial expressions, or sign language.
📖 Low Tech – Tools like picture books or alphabet boards.
📱 High Tech – Devices like iPads or other technology.
And here’s an important fact: AAC doesn’t slow down speech development – it can actually help increase verbal communication!
Let’s use this month to spread awareness and celebrate the many ways we communicate, and push for better access to AAC tools! 🎉

Wondering how to help your child say more words? 🌟 Here are some strategies to try at home to boost their language development:

1️⃣ Be Face to Face – Get down to your child’s level 👶. When you’re face to face, they’ll feel more engaged with you. It also helps you pick up on their non-verbal cues and see what they’re interested in.
2️⃣ Follow Their Lead – Watch what they’re interested in 👀, wait and listen👂. Join in their play by copying their actions, sounds, or words. This shows them you’re paying attention and encourages more interaction.
3️⃣ Pause and Wait – Pause for a moment ⏸️ and give your child time to respond. Look at them expectantly to show you’re waiting for a reply. If they don’t respond, gently model the word or action for them.
4️⃣ Comment – Talk about what you and your child are doing 🧸🎨. Use simple words and phrases while describing activities. “You’re building a tower!” or “That’s a big car!” This helps them connect words to actions.
5️⃣ Use Gestures – Combine your words with gestures or signs 👋. For example, say “drink” and pretend to drink 🥤. Pairing gestures with words helps reinforce understanding.
6️⃣ Offer Choices – Give your child options 🍎🍌. Hold up two items and ask, “Do you want the apple or the banana?” Let them choose by looking, pointing, making sounds, or using words.

✨ These strategies can make a big impact on your child’s language development! Remember, every child progresses at their own pace and you’re doing amazing work.
