Massage Therapist (ANZSCO 411611) is currently listed on Australia’s Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). The occupation may be relevant to certain employer-sponsored visa pathways, including the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) – Core Skills stream and the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) – Direct Entry stream, subject to meeting all applicable requirements.

⚠️ Important: Studying massage therapy does not automatically lead to employer sponsorship or permanent residency.

Sponsorship depends on an eligible employer, an appropriate position and nomination, as well as the applicant meeting the relevant visa, qualification, skills, work experience, English, salary and other requirements in force at the time of application.

💳 Health-fund provider recognition

Where applicable, obtaining recognition as a provider with a private health fund may be useful for therapists working in practices that provide health-fund-rebate services.

However, health-fund provider recognition is not a visa, sponsorship or PR pathway by itself.

The goal is to build the right qualification, practical skills and industry experience, establish a strong professional career, and then explore the employment and migration pathways that may be available based on your individual circumstances.

Have massage experience but no formal qualification yet?

Explore your pathway:

RPL Cert IV → Massage Therapist → Build Experience → Diploma Remedial Massage → Remedial Massage Therapist

➡️ Advanced diploma (Myotherapy)

If your long-term goal is to work towards becoming a Remedial Massage Therapist, there is a structured pathway you can consider:

1️⃣ Massage Experience
Start with your existing massage knowledge, skills and practical experience.

2️⃣ RPL – Certificate IV in Massage Therapy (HLT42021)
If you already have relevant skills, knowledge and experience, you may be eligible to have your existing competency assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Evidence may include:
• Previous massage qualifications
• Work experience
• Client treatment records
• SOAP / clinical notes
• Treatment plans
• Employer references
• Training certificates & CPD
• Practical skills and knowledge

📌 RPL is an assessment process. You must demonstrate the required competency, and the outcome depends on your individual evidence and assessment.

3️⃣ Massage Therapist
Once you have achieved the relevant qualification and meet workplace requirements, you can work within your scope of practice as a Massage Therapist.

4️⃣ Build Your Experience & Clinical Evidence
Continue developing your practical experience and maintain professional records such as treatment notes, case records and relevant professional development.

5️⃣ Diploma of Remedial Massage – HLT52021
Take the next step towards advanced Remedial Massage practice through the Diploma pathway.

Depending on your previous learning and experience, RPL may also be available, subject to individual assessment.

6️⃣ Remedial Massage Therapist
After successfully completing the required qualification and competency requirements, you can progress your career in Remedial Massage.

7️⃣ Health Fund / Professional Association
If you want to provide services that may be claimable through private health insurance, you must separately check the eligibility and provider requirements of the relevant Health Fund and/or professional association.
