✨Supporting compassionate horsewomen to deeply understand their horse, while building ethical, lifelong connection—WITHOUT force or fear✨

Winston has always had good teeth and gets regular dental checks so if this continues or progresses I’ll definitely be exploring other possible causes. Hopefully it will be resolved when this tooth comes through 🦷🤞

Choke can also be caused by eating too much food at once, long stemmy hay getting caught or food getting trapped due to narrowings or malformations of the oesophagus.

Winston’s choke symptoms and how I support him🌿

Every horse will present differently. The first time this occurred for Winston he lay down and presented with colic like symptoms, (laying down and looking at his belly, it hasn’t appeared in this way since).

The symptoms shown in this video have been present all 3 times he’s choked.

🚨Please seek veterinary advice in an emergency, (I’m not a vet) 🩺

I’m sharing my experience to hopefully help someone else feel less lost if they ever encounter this experience…

Choke can be really scary when you don’t understand what’s happening. When we know more, we can do more 📚

Behaviour modification - POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Please be aware the use of positive this context is not about ethics but mathematics.

🥕Positive Reinforcement🍎
Positive = to add
Reinforcement = to increase the likelihood of the behaviour happening again

Positive reinforcement works by adding something the horse wants after performing a desired behaviour. This increases the likelihood they will repeat the behaviour.

Food is often used as the reinforcement in this case, sometimes scratches are used too. The reinforcement needs to be desirable to the horse.

Positive reinforcement is often applied via clicker training. A click or sound marking the desired behaviour and acting as a bridge between desired behaviour being performed and food delivered. It enables very specific parts of behaviours to be reinforced rather than just feeding at the end of the behaviour or behaviour chain where it can be less clear about what was being reinforced.

Clicker training allows for behaviours to be broken down into small increments and rewarded at each stage before building back up and creating behaviour chains.

Positive reinforcement is a principle of behaviour modification. Clicker training is a method of applying the principle of positive reinforcement.
