It’s National Reconciliation Week (NRW), a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation.
At Hesse Rural Health, we recognise the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country, waters, culture and community. As a rural health organisation, we are committed to fostering respectful relationships, culturally safe care and stronger health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our communities.
National Reconciliation Week is held each year from 27 May to 3 June, commemorating two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.
The 2026 theme, “All In”, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day. Reconciliation is not passive and it is not the responsibility of First Nations peoples alone. We all have a role to play in building relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and futures.
Reconciliation is about building strong relationships based on respect, understanding and shared responsibility. A great place to start is by learning more about the lived experiences, histories, and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
You can also take meaningful action by:
• Attending local community or NRW events
• Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses and organisations
• Listening to and amplifying First Nations voices and leaders
