🌬️ August Health Campaign: Lung Cancer & Respiratory Health
Breathe Better. Live Better. Early Detection Saves Lives.

This August, we're raising awareness about lung cancer and respiratory health. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in Australia, but finding it early can make treatment more effective. Looking after your lungs and quitting smoking are two of the most important steps you can take to protect your health.

Healthy lungs matter. Early detection can save lives.

Don't ignore symptoms that last more than 3 weeks, such as:
✔️ Persistent cough
✔️ Shortness of breath
✔️ Chest pain
✔️ Coughing up blood
✔️ Unexplained weight loss

🚭 Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, but it's never too late to quit. Quitting improves your lung health and reduces your risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.

💙 You can protect your lungs by:
• Not smoking or va**ng
• Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations
• Being physically active
• Seeing your GP early if you have ongoing breathing symptoms

Concerned about your lungs or ready to quit smoking? Our GP and nursing team are here to help. Book an appointment today.

🫁 July Health Focus: Protect Yourself Against Pneumococcal Disease 💙

As we move through the colder months and flu season, it’s important to remember that respiratory infections can pose a greater risk to older adults and people with certain health conditions.

Pneumococcal vaccination helps protect against serious infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections.

💉 Who should consider pneumococcal vaccination?
The National Immunisation Program (NIP) recommends pneumococcal vaccination for:
✅ People aged 65 years and older
✅ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who meet age or risk-based eligibility criteria
✅ People with certain medical conditions or risk factors that increase their chance of severe pneumococcal disease

Pneumococcal disease can be more severe when combined with other respiratory illnesses, such as influenza or COVID-19. Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations is one way to reduce the risk of serious illness and help protect yourself and those around you this winter. For more information: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/pneumococcal-disease.aspx

📞 Not sure if you are eligible or due for a pneumococcal vaccine?
Speak with your GP, nurse, or immunisation provider today.

This winter let’s prioritise prevention, protection, and looking after our community. 💙

JUNE HEALTH CAMPAIGN – BOWEL SCREENING AWARENESS
“Screen Early. Save Lives.”
Why Bowel Screening Matters

Bowel cancer often develops without symptoms, but if detected early, more than 90% of cases can be successfully treated.

The Australian Government’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program offers free bowel screening to eligible Australians aged 45–74 years https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/national-bowel-cancer-screening-program?language=en

Key Messages

✅ People aged 50–74 years automatically receive a free bowel screening kit in the mail every 2 years.

✅ People aged 45–49 years can now request their first free screening kit.

✅ The test is simple, free, and completed privately at home.

✅ A positive FOBT/FIT result does not mean cancer, but it is important to see your GP promptly for further assessment and follow-up.

For more information:
Contact Windang Family Medical Centre on 0242010288

This program aims to reduce deaths from bowel cancer by detecting early signs of the disease. If found early, more than 90% of cases can be successfully treated. Eligible Australians aged 45 to 74 can do a free test at home every 2 years. Learn about the program and how to do the test.

🦴 Osteoporosis Awareness – Protect Your Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a “silent” condition that weakens bones and increases fracture risk. Early assessment and prevention can make a real difference.

Are you at risk?

🔎 Bone health review is recommended for:
• Women over 50
• Men over 70
• Anyone with a history of minimal-trauma fracture
• People taking long-term corticosteroids
• Those with chronic medical conditions affecting bone strength

📊 Ask about a DEXA scan
A DEXA scan measures bone density and helps determine fracture risk.

🥛 Support Strong Bones
• Adequate calcium intake (diet first where possible)
• Vitamin D optimisation
• Regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise
• Falls prevention strategies
For more information: https://aci.health.nsw.gov.au/statewide-programs/lbvc/osteoporotic-refracture-prevention

💬 Our team is auditing patients on long-term corticosteroids and reviewing those at higher risk. If you think you may be due for a bone health check, we encourage you to book an appointment.

📞 Contact us to schedule your bone health review@ 02 4201 0288
