Have you ever been receiving a massage and the therapist says something like “just relax, I got you”.

And you think, “But I am relaxed”.

And then maybe your thoughts start to spiral…because maybe you’re not as relaxed as you thought?

Or maybe you’ve been the massage therapist who notices the guarding and holding tension of your clients body, that just won’t let go.

My new Substack drop explores this and what to say instead of “Just relax”.

This week I’ve been thinking about the word expansive.

It came up in conversation in the massage room earlier this week, when a regular client settled onto the table (the same treatment table as in my old space, only now in a new room) and said, “I like this. It feels expansive.”

This has stayed with me all week, because that is how I feel working in this new space, from home.

There have been some other beautiful conversations this week too. Little pieces of people’s stories being shared. Things that have helped me understand them, and sometimes their bodies, in a slightly different way.

I’ve thought alot about my new room and how I’m creating a type of therapeutic ecosystem.

A few weeks in, I think I understand that even more.

It’s not just the massage.

It’s the warmth of the room, the quiet, the birds outside, the time, the conversation, the trust, the feeling of not being rushed, and the permission to simply be for a while.

I feel different working here too.

More grounded. More curious. More present.

More expansive.

I genuinely love my massage clients, they always share the best things with me.

Sometimes it’s a box of home grown veg or bunch of flowers.

Other times a recipe or restaurant recommendation.

Today, my client shared with me the coolest app, that he described as “Shazam, but for birds”.

It’s free. So of course I’ve just downloaded it.

You know what I’ll be doing on my lunch break today 🤓

I’ve been thinking lately about how often we make unnecessary meaning around things that simply…are.

Not everything needs interpreting.
Not every silence needs filling. Not every feeling needs a story.

And that goes for the body too…sometimes a shoulder feels sore because it does. There is not always an underlying pathology, an area of imbalance or problem that needs fixing.

Seeing things as they are, rather than through the stories we tell ourselves… Thats a different kind of peace there.

A year ago, I published my first Substack article—with a nostalgic longing for the old Blogger days, when we wrote simply because we had something to say.

Part reflection, part storytelling, Beneath the Touch is where I share musings from the massage room about the bigger themes that live beneath the work: communication, care, boundaries, humanity, and what it means to truly listen.

One year on, I’m still writing—and I’m beginning to see that this might become something more than a collection of articles…. it’s the beginning of a much larger body of work.

Every morning, I open the door to the massage room, draw the curtains and allow the morning light to flood the space.

The shadow and light is particularly pleasing this morning 💚

😩 Your budding hockey star accidentally smashed a window.

😃 You now work from home and can easily be available for the glazier to fix it.

Btw…why do they always give a random estimate time…between 12 and 5????

One of the best things about my new room is having more space. My daughter built me this cute Lego bouquet on the weekend, just for the massage room 💐
