During pregnancy, the pelvic floor muscles are under a lot more load with the extra weight of the baby. This is often when women first start to notice symptoms like bladder leakage or changes in bowel control.

Our physiotherapists usually see patients for an antenatal assessment around 20 to 24 weeks. At this appointment, we focus on education around normal bladder and bowel function, assess pelvic floor muscle function, and also have a chat about mode of delivery and what that might look like.

PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) is a condition that affects hormones, metabolism, and ovulation.
It’s the updated term being used to better reflect what’s really going on in the body, moving away from the outdated focus on “cysts” in the ovaries
PMOS can present differently for everyone, but often involves:
Hormonal imbalance
Irregular or absent ovulation
Metabolic changes, including insulin resistance
It’s a complex condition that can affect many areas of health, not just the ovaries.

“It might sound like it’s just a simple name change, but it’s seriously not,” says Professor Helena Teede, who led the global initiative to rename PCOS to PMOS.

“Not only will it move away from that inaccurate cyst implication and the focus on the ovaries, it will actually get people to understand the broader nature of the condition, that it is an endocrine or hormonal imbalance condition.

“It will validate what a lot of women know and experience.”

After years of confusion and misunderstanding around PCOS, experts are hopeful the new name PMOS will help women feel more seen and better understood.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome reflects that this condition is complex, whole-body and different for every person living with it.
For many women, the change is about more than terminology, it’s about improving education, reducing stigma and helping people access support and treatment sooner.

Dr Pip will be away from the 5 July to 28 September 2026 on sabbatical leave.

We’re lucky to have a fantastic obstetrics team at Amelie Private who’ll be continuing care for Dr Pip’s patients while she’s away, so everything stays well looked after and supported. While away, Pip’s patients will be under the expert care of her colleague and friend Dr Kim Dobromilsky, who has joined Amelie Private
