H.Parsons Funeral Directors

H.Parsons Funeral Directors H.Parsons is your only locally owned and only family operated Funeral Director. Parsons is staffed by an exceptional team of 50 local employees.

Over 130 years, we've learnt that saying goodbye looks a little different for everyone. That's why we help to arrange funerals that are as unique as the lives we celebrate. Supporting our community for over 130 years

The Parsons family association with the Illawarra began on April 24, 1839 when Matthew and Puah Parsons arrived in Wollongong by horse and dray via Mount Keira Road. Today, Alan Parsons, Funeral Director, Managing Director and Chief Car Washer with Parsons Funerals follows in the business started by his great grandfather over 130 years ago. One of his greatest rewards today is to be joined in the business by his son Anthony, the fifth generation of Parsons Funeral Directors. "The horse and carriage have gone but the one constant we are dedicated to upholding is to remain a local Illawarra family owned and 100 per cent Australian owned and operated company," Alan said. Alan believes that doing this ensures they can continue the family legacy in contributing to and supporting the economy, growth and stability of our beautiful Illawarra.

Today is 💛

It’s a reminder that a simple question can open the door to a meaningful conversation, and that we can Ask R U OK? Any Day.

Whether it’s a friend, family member, colleague or someone you know who is going through a difficult time, taking a moment to check in can mean more than you realise.

This can be especially true for someone experiencing grief. While a funeral brings family and friends together to offer support, the days and weeks afterwards can feel very different. The calls may become less frequent, but the need for connection doesn’t necessarily go away.

Not sure how to start the conversation? There are four simple steps:

💬 Ask
Start with a genuine question.
“You’ve been on my mind. How are you going?”

👂 Listen
Give them your full attention and let them talk. You don’t need to have the right words or fix what they’re going through, sometimes being heard is what matters most.

🤝 Encourage action
Ask what might help and encourage them to take a positive next step or connect with someone who can support them.

💛 Check in
Keep the conversation going. A message, phone call or coffee a few days, weeks or even months later can remind someone that you’re still there.

R U OK? isn’t just a question for today. Ask R U OK? Any Day. 💛 🩵

A lesson my family has passed down through five generations is this:
Being local means something different when you've been part of a community for more than 130 years.
For our family, the South Coast isn't simply where we work. It's where we've grown up, built relationships, supported local organisations and shared life's important moments alongside local families.
When people choose H.Parsons Funeral Directors, they're often people we've known through schools, sporting clubs, community groups and local connections. That creates a responsibility we never take for granted.

What does being local mean to you?

One of our Funeral Directors, Sacha, recently attended the annual Illawarra Cancer Carers High Tea Fundraiser, a beautiful afternoon that brought almost 300 people together to show their support for local families affected by cancer.

Together, more than $23,000 was raised for cancer research and patient care, with the funds staying right here in the Illawarra. This generosity will help make a meaningful difference to local cancer patients, carers and their families when they need support most.

We were proud to contribute $1,000 towards this important cause, and it was especially heartwarming to see the warm response to Sacha’s attendance, with so many people taking the time to thank her personally for being there.

It’s a privilege to support organisations like the Illawarra Cancer Carers whose work makes such a meaningful difference to local families by providing emotional support, essential resources and non-medical care to cancer patients, their families and carers across our community. 🩵

This Father's Day, we're thinking of the dads, grandfathers and father figures in our lives, and the influence that carries through the generations that follow.

At H.Parsons, that feels especially close to home. Alan and Anthony Parsons are a lovely example of a father and son whose bond has grown through years of shared commitment to family, community and caring for others.

Father's Day brings different feelings for different people. For some, it's a day of laughter and time together. For others, it's a quiet day of remembrance.

Today, we pause to appreciate the fathers in our lives, and to hold close the memories of those no longer with us.

Wishing everyone a gentle and happy Father's Day. 🩵

💬 Today is

Dying to Know Day is an opportunity to have the conversations we often avoid, but that can make such a meaningful difference when the time comes.

Talking openly about death, dying and our end-of-life wishes can help ensure our loved ones understand what matters to us, while giving everyone greater clarity and peace of mind. 🕊️

That’s why starting the conversation is so important.

We’ve written a blog exploring why these conversations matter, what we can learn from having them, and how planning ahead can help take some of the uncertainty away during an already difficult time.

Today is Aged Care Employee Day 💙

Today, we recognise the incredible aged care professionals who make a difference in the lives of older Australians through their compassion, kindness and dedication.

Over the past year, we've visited several local aged care homes as part of our initiative to bring miniature therapy horses to aged-care residents across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven. In partnership with Adorable Pony Parties , we've visited Warrigal, IRT Group , and many other local aged care communities, bringing smiles and creating meaningful moments for residents, families and staff. 🐴

To every aged care employee, thank you for everything you do. Your dedication makes a lasting difference, and today we're proud to recognise and celebrate you.
