T A N D E M F E E D I N G

Tandem feeding is simply breastfeeding siblings who aren’t twins.

It is safe to continue to breastfeed your older child during a subsequent pregnancy. Some toddlers will self wean during this time as your supply tends to drop due to pregnancy hormones. The milk will also change back to colostrum, which will taste different.

If your toddler isn’t ready to wean, you may want to consider tandem feeding.

Benefits include:
🤱🏽your older child can ease engorgement, which can make it easier for your newborn to latch.
🤱🏽by breastfeeding two children, your milk supply will be boosted.
🤱🏽it can be a lovely way to help your older child bond with and adjust to having a new sibling.

Some mums feed both children together, others prefer to keep feeds separate. There is no right or wrong when it comes to tandem feeding, so choose the way that works for you!

Did you know that breasts have their very own regulating system? The Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation (FIL) is a type of whey protein found in breast milk. This protein acts to slow milk production when the breast is full.
🤱🏽the longer milk stays in the breast, the higher the concentration of FIL, which signals the breast to decrease production.
🤱🏽As milk is removed, the FIL levels drop, signalling the breast to make more milk.

So, in essence, the more milk your baby takes, the more milk your b***s will make!
