This month my daughter dialled into Christmas in July by video call.

She’s in the Navy. She was exactly where she needed to be, and she was also right there on the screen, present and absent at the same time, in the way only technology can make possible.

It got me thinking about the fear of missing out. Not the social media kind, where you scroll through someone’s highlights and feel vaguely left out. The real kind. The kind that comes when you genuinely cannot be somewhere you want to be, and you have to sit with that.

It’s the version carried by defence families, shift workers, healthcare staff, parents and carers. Missing out that isn’t a choice. It isn’t laziness or avoidance, it’s the cost of the life you’ve chosen, or the life that chose you. And the grief that comes with it is real, even when nobody names it.

My new blog is about why FOMO hurts, who quietly carries the heaviest version of it, and how a small shift toward JOMO, the joy of missing out, can help you come home to where you actually are.

It’s in the things that don’t always get named. Choice about lighting and seating.Sensory aids available always. No assumptions about eye contact. A dietician who understands it’s ok to eat peanut butter on toast every day for breakfast, Intake forms sent ahead so nothing gets sprung on you. Clinicians who adjust to how your mind works instead of asking you to mask your way through the hour.

Appointments available now. Psychology, dietetics and coaching, in person or via telehealth.

Nobody hands you the debrief before you start.

Our newest blog post is Lola’s honest take on what she wishes someone had told her about becoming a psychologist. The isolation, the being a beginner in public for years, the way it quietly reshapes your relationships, and the bit nobody mentions: how genuinely fun this job can be.

If you’re studying psych, sitting in your provisional years, or just curious what it’s actually like in the room, this one’s for you.

Winter sun, warm room, and a chair with your name on it. ☀️

There’s something about a Wollongong winter’s day like this. Crisp outside, golden light through the window, and inside it’s quiet and warm.💛

We have appointments available this week.

If you’ve been meaning to reach out, this is your nudge. Psychology, dietetics and coaching, in person or via telehealth. We also have room for neuroaffirming AuADHD assessments over the next few weeks.

I’ll be happy when…”

When the promotion comes. When there’s a bit more money. When we move, meet the right person, get through this patch. Then we can finally relax.

Here’s the uncomfortable bit. Researchers followed people who won big lottery prizes. After the initial euphoria, within months their happiness had settled back to about where it started.

It’s called the hedonic treadmill. We adapt, the bar moves, and we start scanning for whatever might finally do it.

The grass is greener where you water it. Not on the other side.

The real question isn’t how many hours. It’s what the screen is helping you or them avoid. Anxiety, loneliness, overwhelm, a need for control or belonging.

Name that, and real change begins.

A good coffee from nom.wollongong a few quiet minutes and a breath before the day begins. Compassion starts with self compassion.

Then I’m ready to hold space for whoever walks through the door.
