An inspiring weekend at the Aurora Healthcare Australia NSW Mental Health Strategic Planning Weekend.

Together with mental health professionals and leaders from hospitals across NSW, we explored new ideas, shared experiences and had important conversations about the future of mental health care.

We were privileged to hear from psychiatrists, key hospital service representatives and guests from EML Group together with Professor Richard Bryant, and AVANT Mutual. Their insights sparked meaningful conversations about the future of mental health care and the role we all play in driving positive change.

The weekend reinforced our commitment to improving health outcomes and continuing to lead the way in innovative, person-centred mental health care.

The AusAlert national test Monday 27 July 2026

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, it will be tested the system across Australia.

On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The test times across Australian time zones are:

• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)
• 1:30 pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill NSW)
• 12:00 pm AWST (WA)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds. If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this photo is a flashback to 2020... but it's actually a reminder that being prepared for the unexpected is an important part of what we do every day.

Infection prevention and control training remains a key component of mandatory staff education and our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality mental health care.

That's why our team regularly practises the correct donning and doffing of PPE, ensuring they have the skills, confidence, and knowledge to respond effectively to potential outbreaks or infectious disease risks.

We hope these skills are rarely needed, but preparedness doesn't happen by accident. It comes from ongoing training, practice, and a team dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care and safety.

Because quality care means being ready for anything... even if it occasionally looks like we've stepped back into 2020.

If you're passionate about staff education, consider joining us as a Quality and Risk Manager.

Understanding Dual Diagnosis: When Mental Health and Substance Use Occur Together

Many Australians face mental health challenges like depression or anxiety. Others struggle with substance use. But what happens when both occur at the same time?

This is called dual diagnosis, and it creates a complex cycle where each condition makes the other worse. Someone with depression might turn to alcohol to cope or a person with anxiety might use drugs to calm their nerves.

Signs to watch for:

▪ Extreme mood swings or behavioural changes
▪ Increasing reliance on substances to cope with emotions
▪ Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities
▪ Physical and emotional health decline
▪ Difficulty managing stress or overwhelming feelings

Why does integrated treatment matter? Treating just one condition isn't enough.

Contact our admissions and assessment team for a confidential conversation about treatment options and take the first step toward recovery.

We were privileged to welcome the team from RSL NSW Homes 4 Heroes (H4H) team to South Coast Private Hospital for a visit focused on collaboration and strengthening support for our veteran community.

The visit was an opportunity to share more about our specialised mental health programs for veterans, while also listening and learning from the H4H team about how we can continue to improve the support we provide.

We know that the journey to recovery is strengthened when organisations work together. By building strong partnerships and sharing knowledge, we can help create better pathways to care and ensure veterans feel understood, respected and supported.

A big thank you to the H4H team for visiting us, sharing your insights and for your ongoing commitment to supporting those who have served.

Together, we can continue to make a difference. ❤️

Trauma isn’t always PTSD, but it can still have an impact.

When people hear the word trauma, many immediately think of PTSD.

While trauma and PTSD are closely connected, they are not the same thing.

Trauma is the emotional and physical response to an experience that feels overwhelming, unsafe or difficult to process.

It can affect people in different ways. Some people may notice their symptoms ease with time, support and healthy coping strategies. For others, the impact of trauma can continue, affecting their sleep, relationships, work, emotions and sense of safety.

PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after trauma, but not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD.

What matters is recognising when you, or someone you care about, may need support.

💙 Understanding what you’re experiencing is the first step.

Recovery is possible, and help is available.

If you or someone you know is experiencing the ongoing effects of trauma, our Admissions and Assessment Team can provide information about treatment options and help guide you through the next steps.
