Cold and flu season is upon us and Chinese medicine is here to help.

Did you know that not all colds and flu’s are the same?
While two people may both have a sore throat, cough and fever, their treatment will be different.

For example:
🥶 Chills, body aches and a clear runny nose indicates Wind- Cold
🥵 Fever, sore throat, and yellow mucous indicates Wind-Heat

Your practitioner will tailor treatment to your individual symptoms. Treatment will likely include:
- herbal medicine
- acupuncture
- diet and lifestyle recommendations

I currently have a lingering dry cough and itchy throat so have self prescribed the herbal formula Zhi Sou San (Stop Cough Powder), am keeping myself warm and having lots of ginger, garlic and green onion to strengthen my immunity, and stewed pear to restore some moisture to my lungs.

In the spirit of this chaotic Fire Horse year I’d like to share the story of The Old Man and His Horse (Sài Wēng Shī Mǎ) - a matter of perspective.

Once upon a time, there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years.

One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbours came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said, “you must be so sad.”

“We’ll see,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it two other wild horses.

“How wonderful,” the neighbours exclaimed! “Not only did your horse return, but you received two more. What great fortune you have!”

“We’ll see,” answered the farmer.

The following day, his son tried to break in one of the wild horses, fell, and broke his leg. The neighbours again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune. “Now your son cannot help you with your farming,” they said, “What terrible luck you have!”

“We’ll see,” replied the old farmer.

The following week, military officials came to the village to conscript young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbours congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out. “Such great news. You must be so happy!”

The man smiled to himself and said once again.

“We’ll see”

I love this story because it reminds us that everything is a matter of perspective. Nothing is inherently “good” or “bad”but forever in a state of flux. My takeaway is that when things are seemingly negative, and there’s only so much we can do about it, perhaps rather than allowing it steal our peace we should learn to lean into acceptance. The story will continue to unfold 🐎

My Yin Yang baby at a few weeks old ☯️
My favourite concept in TCM is Yin & Yang. It represents two forces that are opposite yet complimentary in nature, interconnected and interdependent. One cannot exist without the other. Just as day turns to night, activity is followed by rest, and growth is followed by decline.

Yin represents:
Darkness
Stillness
Slowness
Density
Coldness
Wetness
Receptivity
Contraction
Descending
Inwardness
Feminine

Yang represents:
Brightness
Movement
Quickness
Diffuseness
Activity
Heat
Dryness
Assertiveness
Expansion
Ascending
Outwardness
Masculine

An example: menopausal symptoms are a classic example of the Yin Yang dynamic. As hormones such as estrogen decline with age, things that are Yin in nature (cooling, moist and nourishing) also decline. In turn, Yang becomes relatively excess, manifesting as hot flushes and dryness.

The beautiful thing about Chinese Medicine is that we have techniques to restore this balance of Yin and Yang through acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle ☯️

🍓Heard of the clean fifteen and dirty dozen? Each year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes two lists of the produce containing the most and least pesticide residue (even after washing).

Why does this matter?

☠️ Pesticide exposure is linked with multiple serious long term health issues including different types of cancers, birth defects, fertility decline, endocrine disruption, autoimmune disease, allergies, gut conditions and more.

⬇️ Reduce pesticide exposure (especially important for children, pregnant women and those trying to conceive)

💰Spend smarter. Choose organic for the Dirty Dozen and save on the Clean Fifteen

🌱Support sustainability. Low pesticide choices help the environment.

🥕While the EWG’s research is based in the US it can still serve as a guide for Australian produce - Basically, smaller, thin skinned, or leafy foods (like berries and spinach) tend to contain more residue. For more info on Australian produce - we can refer to the National Residue Survey

Common yes, normal no.

If you dread that time of the month or are having to cancel plans - it doesn’t have to be that way!

In Chinese Medicine period pain is a red flag 🚩 signalling imbalance within the body - not just something to put up with.

If resorting to foetal position, pain killers and a heat pack is your reality - let’s find a better solution🌹
