We’re grateful for the many groups raising funds so that we can deliver healthcare to you, closer to home. 🙏

Today, we’d like to thank the Inverloch Fundraising Auxiliary, Inverloch Lions Club and the community for helping Wonthaggi Hospital to buy a SOZO machine for the early detection and management of lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is a common side effect of cancer treatment and occurs when lymphatic vessels or nodes have been damaged or are not formed properly. Left untreated, this leads to progressive swelling over time.

Until now, cancer patients at Wonthaggi Hospital have been monitored for lymphoedema using a SOZO machine usually based at the Phillip Island Community Hospital at Cowes. The new, second machine will stay at Wonthaggi Hospital, benefiting patients by increasing the availability of monitoring.

The Inverloch Fundraising Auxiliary raised $18,050 to enable us to buy the SOZO machine, including a $8,000 donation from the Inverloch Lions Club.

The remaining funds were raised by selling hand-made cards, holding barbecues and other initiatives.

Thanks so much to everyone who supported these kind, generous and dedicated fundraising volunteers.

Today is World Blood Donor Day, a global tribute to the millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors whose generosity saves lives every day.🩸

Their contributions are essential to our healthcare system, helping patients during emergencies, childbirth, surgeries, cancer treatment and the life-long care of many serious conditions.

This year’s theme, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, places humanity at the heart of every blood donation.

It reminds us that each donation is more than a medical act: it’s a powerful expression of solidarity, compassion and collective responsibility.

The theme highlights how every donor helps form a lifeline that connects and protects us all.

Safe blood remains dependent on people willing to donate regularly and voluntarily.

You can help by donating blood to Australian Red Cross Lifeblood.

The Mobile Donor Centre is coming to:
📍Leongatha Memorial Hospital from 23 June to 3 July
📍Wonthaggi Big W carpark from 11-21 August.

Book your appointment now at the Mobile Donor Centre 👉 lifeblood.com.au/donor-centre

We value every one of our senior patients and clients by delivering aged care services with attention, empathy and compassion. 👴👵

Across our region, we support older individuals through Residential Care, Social Support, Meals on Wheels, Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), Home Care Packages, Sub-Acute programs, GEM at Home, District Nursing services, Allied Health, Post-Acute Care, Transition Care Program, Residential In Reach, Social Work and more.

We offer more than 200 residential care beds across seven sites, featuring comfortable buildings with dedicated staff, who connect with residents and value residents’ independence.

That’s why they also take our residents out and about in our community. Residents of Griffiths Point Lodge at San Remo, and Kirrak House at Wonthaggi, recently enjoyed an outing to the Tea Cosy Festival at Fish Creek.

We would like to congratulate Gary King on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours.

Gary has dedicated more than 50 years of service to Kooweerup Hospital and the Koo Wee Rup community. Since becoming involved with the hospital as a volunteer and fundraiser in 1975, he has played a significant role in supporting and advocating for local healthcare services.

Gary served as Chair of the Kooweerup Hospital Board from 1997 to 2008 and was a key contributor to the Save the Kooweerup Hospital campaign, helping ensure the hospital remained a vital community asset. He also served as a Special Ambassador during the hospital's 100-year celebrations and continues to volunteer and support the hospital today.

Beyond his contribution to healthcare, Gary has dedicated decades of service to community organisations, local sport and civic life across Koo Wee Rup.

We thank Gary for his outstanding commitment to our hospital and community, and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.

CareSync Exchange, a new information sharing system, is being rolled out across Victorian public health services.

It’s a secure electronic patient health information sharing system. It allows clinicians to access critical patient health information regarding care the patient has received at other participating public hospitals.

With CareSync Exchange, the patient's treating clinician can access information to support clinical decision making and continuity of care, including:
👉 Patient details, including demographics and emergency contacts
👉 Patient hospital visits including inpatient, emergency, and outpatient
👉 Clinical documents, diagnostic test reports and hospital discharge summaries.

Importantly, only clinicians actively involved in the care of a patient are permitted to access that patient’s information, and information can not be used for research purposes.

As part of the statewide rollout, data from patients at Bayside Health will be visible to clinicians from Austin, Monash, Eastern and Northern Health from Monday 17 November 2025.

Following completion of compulsory privacy training, Bayside Health emergency staff will have access to CareSync Exchange data from Sunday 26 November 2025.
CareSync will then be rolled out across the health service in February 2026 – more information about the change, including training schedules, will be available closer to the date.

You can read more about CareSync at https://www.health.vic.gov.au/caresync-exchange

Foster Early Learning are leading the way in creating a healthier start for local children.

They have received Victorian Government recognition for achieving best practice benchmarks in all health areas of the Achievement Program. They are the second education setting in Bass Coast and South Gippsland shires to complete this milestone!

The Achievement Program is a free initiative that provides long day care centres, kindergartens and schools with a framework to bring together and enhance their health and wellbeing initiatives, supporting a whole-service approach to health and wellbeing.

Local support is provided by the South Coast Prevention Team, a partnership between Bayside Health Regional and South Gippsland Hospital.

If you or a loved one need cancer care at Wonthaggi Hospital, chances are you may meet our two new Nurse Unit Managers.

Erin Passarin and Mahlee O’Donnell share the role of managing the Integrated Care Unit, our department that delivers cancer and infusion care.

Mahlee said, “I love the relationship building with our specialists, other departments and our consumers, as well as our colleagues across Bayside Health. We all learn from each other.”

The Integrated Care Unit is forecast to expand. In 2025 alone, we delivered 3,154 episodes of care to people from as far away as Pioneer Bay in the north-west to Sandy Point in the south-east.

We mainly treat blood conditions, as well as solid organ cancers such breast, bowel, lung, prostate, melanoma and other skin cancers.

“More and more people are able to have their treatments closer to home as our capability expands,” Erin said.

Bayside Health Regional offers cancer treatments at both Leongatha Memorial Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospital.
