Cast your mind back if you can…
I know I can…
Because that photo of myself and my netball team was taken just before the start of our last grand final, and I could barely run from Achilles Tendinopathy- the secondary injury from my meniscus that came about from returning to netball too quickly in the previous season.
I could barely walk on a good day and my Achilles was always feeling so bruised and swollen.
Rehab was tedious and painful and very different to what I had done before where I had to take it right back to basics with basic balance and long isometric calf raises.
So many versions of calf raises!!
We had a four week break until the new season and I took the first two games off so that I had a full six weeks with no running and some designated rehab.
From there, it wasn’t just getting back into full games. I’d play a quarter and then a half and then finally a three-quarter game and a full game.
Lots and lots of accellaratuon and decelleration work… oh and more calf raises!
But again it would take me a full week of management to be able to get through each stage, but thankfully, I was progressing.
I’ve had a few other health issues that I’ve overshadowed my Achilles, but thankfully, when I think about it, my Achilles is no longer a problem.
And last night we won the prelim putting us into the grand final yet again for a third season in a row and this time I have no knee pain (previous meniscus injury) and no Achilles pain!
So I guess the TAKEAWAY is that when you are doing the rehab, it can feel arduous, lonely, and frustrating, but if you stick to the plan and don’t rush yourself, you might actually get through the rehab to a point where the injury is no longer a concern. Yes you’ll need to manage the muscles and maintain joint strength
/function but you won’t be stuck at your worst for too long!
So here’s to doing the rehab properly…. And to us for getting to a 3rd grand final in a row!!
