Low iron stores in toddlers, children and teens are more common than most parents realise.

Almost every day in clinic, I see children of all ages with depleted iron stores. One of the challenges is that iron deficiency doesn't always present as obvious fatigue. Instead, it can show up in ways such as tantrums and sleep disturbances that are easily mistaken for "just a phase" or a child's personality.

Low Iron is mostly a consequence of the enormous growth demands children experience. Never should parents feel guilty when they discover low iron stores, but it does pay to be informed and intentional.

Iron is one of the most important nutrients for growing children, playing a vital role in:
~ Brain development, learning and focus
~ Neurotransmitter production
~ Healthy blood volume and oxygen transport
~ Growth and development
~ Immune function and resilience
~ Energy production

Supporting healthy iron levels starts with offering a variety of both haem iron sources (such as red meat, liver, chicken, egg yolk, and fish) and non-haem iron sources (such as legumes, tofu, cashews, spinach and iron-fortified foods). It's also helpful to pair plant sources with vitamin C-rich foods to improve absorption.

If you're concerned your child may have low iron, speak with your healthcare practitioner. Iron supplementation should always be guided by appropriate testing and individual assessment.

Who knew fart research could be this interesting? 💨

I couldn't help but chuckle when I came across this study... but in all honesty, it's actually pretty helpful clinically. Because really, who knows how many farts a day is considered normal?

Researchers tracked 'flatus' events in more than 6,500 Australians over 10 days and found that the average person passes wind around 5 times per day.

A few other interesting findings:
💨 men reported more flatus than women (are we really surprised about this one?)
💨 adults aged 26–45 years had the highest frequency.
💨 passing wind peaked before bedtime and was least common in the early morning.
💨 significant individual variability was observed.

As awkward as it can feel to talk about, passing wind is a normal and healthy sign that fermentation is happening in your gut. In many cases, it's part of having a thriving microbiome.

However, if your gas is accompanied by pain, bloating, significant discomfort, or so foul-smelling that it regularly clears the room, it might be time to seek some professional input on the composition of your microbiome and the nature of your eating pattern. I am here to help.

One of the best ways to support your breastfeeding journey, is to nourish yourself well.

Breastfeeding places incredible demands on the body, increasing your requirements for protein, fluids, healthy fats and key nutrients, with nutrient requirements often higher than at any stage of the pregnancy.

This warming postpartum porridge includes ingredients chosen to support breastfeeding, including:

~ Protein-rich Greek yoghurt to help meet increased protein and calcium requirements during breastfeeding.
~ Oats and quinoa flakes for slow-release energy to fuel busy days.
~ Walnuts, h**p or chia seeds to provide essential fatty acids and gentle fibre.
~ Sunflower lecithin, which may help women prone to recurrent blocked ducts.
~ Berries and kiwifruit for antioxidants, vitamin C and fibre.
~ Cinnamon and currants for natural sweetness and polyphenol antioxidants to nourish a healthy microbiome.

One of the best things about this recipe is that you can prepare it the night before, making it an easy, nourishing breakfast on those mornings when time and energy are in short supply.

Every breastfeeding journey is different, and I honour every mother's experience.

If you're breastfeeding, focus on nourishing yourself with adequate protein, staying well hydrated, eating enough healthy fats. Do seek personalised support if you're experiencing challenges such as low supply, blocked ducts or mastitis. There are some wonderful Lactation specialists out there and Nutrition can make a measurable impact.

Save this recipe for a simple breakfast that supports both you and your breastfeeding journey.

Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and we honour every path to feeding your baby.

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, I wanted to share a few evidence-informed ways to help support healthy breast milk production for those who are breastfeeding.

Supporting your body during this season starts with the basics:
~ Prioritise adequate protein intake to provide the building blocks for milk production.
~ Stay well hydrated with plenty of filtered water and nourishing herbal teas.
~ Include essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3s, to support both maternal and infant health.
~ Don't overlook calcium, as breastfeeding places greater demands on your body's calcium reserves.
~ If you're prone to blocked ducts, sunflower lecithin may help emulsify fats in breast milk and reduce the risk of recurrence.
~ Emerging research also suggests that specific probiotic strains may help reduce the risk of mastitis when prescribed appropriately.

Breastfeeding places incredible demands on the body, and good nutrition can make a meaningful difference to both your well-being and your milk supply.

As always, supplements should be individualised and discussed with your healthcare practitioner, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Brain fog is one of the most commonly reported bothersome symptoms during the perimenopausal transition.

While brain fog is not unique to peri-menopause, fluctuating hormones can make symptoms such as forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, mental fatigue, and word-finding challenges feel much more noticeable.

It is a transitional symptom that often impacts confidence, work performance, and sense of self.

The good news is, it's not all in your head, the experience is real for many women and importantly, brain fog is not the same as cognitive decline.

There are several evidence-informed ways to support brain health during this stage of life:

〰️ Regular exercise to support BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), to protect neural connectivity.
〰️ Prioritising sleep, one of the biggest contributors to cognitive function.
〰️ Following a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, legumes, olive oil, nuts, seeds, herbs and oily seafood.
〰️ Ensuring adequate omega-3 intake through food or a quality supplement.
〰️ Minimising alcohol intake, which can worsen sleep, mood and cognitive symptoms.
〰️ Investigating potentially confounders such as iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, and vitamin B12 deficiency.

If you're experiencing brain fog, know that you're not alone and that support is available. The team at Jean Hailes has some excellent patient resources for women wanting to learn more about navigating this transition .

When we think about dementia risk, many people assume it's largely determined by genetics. But research suggests there are a number of factors throughout life that can influence our risk, many of which are modifiable.

What's particularly interesting is that these risk factors span every stage of life, from education in early years, through to hearing health, physical activity, blood sugar regulation, cardiovascular health, social connectivity, and more.

Some of the most impactful areas we can focus efforts on prevention include:
~ regular physical activity
~ managing blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
~ prioritising hearing health
~ reducing smoking and excessive alcohol intake
~ maintaining social connections and community
~ supporting mental health
~ looking after vision as we age

It's important to recognise that the small choices we make consistently across our lifetime can have a meaningful impact on long-term brain health. Because looking after your brain starts long before retirement age.

This information is from the incredible team at Jean Hailes. They have excellent patient resources for women wanting to learn more about navigating health and life transitions .

Collagen is often marketed to athletes, but the benefits may extend far beyond the gym. 💪🏼

This recent study caught my attention. In a small 4-week randomised controlled trial involving female runners. Participants taking 20g of collagen peptides daily experienced improvements in markers of bone health, and reductions in inflammatory markers.

Whilst more research is always welcome, it's exciting to see evidence supporting collagen's role in recovery, connective tissue health, and maintaining a strong musculoskeletal system.

As we age, collagen production naturally declines, which is one reason I often consider collagen as part of a broader strategy to support healthy bones, joints, tendons, skin turgor, and healthy ageing.

Of course, collagen isn't a magic one-size-fits-all supplement, and it's not for everyone. Multiple variables such as genetics, personalised nutrition, strength training, metabolic health, sleep quality, and active recovery all play an important role in structural integrity & recovery, too.

If you've been curious about collagen but feel overwhelmed by the options available, reach out. Not all collagen products are created equal, and quality really does matter.

If I had to choose a herbal medicine that I prescribed the most, it would probably be Withania. 🌿

Also known as Ashwagandha, this Ayurvedic herbal adaptogen has become incredibly popular in recent years, but what draws me to it isn't just the research, it's the history.

I had the privilege of seeing Withania being grown, harvested and processed in Sri Lanka, where traditional herbal medicine continues to be woven into everyday healthcare. Seeing that connection to culture, land and healing left a lasting impression on me.

Withania is often described as an adaptogen. It supports our ability to adapt to stress while helping protect other body systems such as the immune, digestive and reproductive systems from the impacts of chronic stress. It's grounding, calming and restorative, which is why it has earned a permanent place in both my dispensary and my own supplement routine.

That said, Withania is not for everyone. If someone is going to react, it's often through digestive symptoms such as nausea or stomach upset, and there are certain conditions & presentations where it is contra-indicated. This is why personalised prescribing matters.

Whilst Ashwagandha now has human clinical trials supporting its adaptogenic benefits, what appeals to me most is the blending of the sacred and the science. Sometimes the oldest medicines still have the most to teach us.
