For many people from multicultural communities, finding mental health support is made harder by uncertainty about who can access government-funded services.

Buyan who's our Multicultural Community Engagement Coordinator, explains that people often do not know where to go, how to navigate the system or whether they are eligible for support.

One major source of confusion is Medicare. People living in Australia on temporary visas may assume that without a Medicare card, mental health services are not available to them. When services do not clearly communicate their eligibility requirements or explain that some support can be accessed without Medicare, people can be left unsure of where to turn.

These barriers show how the way health systems communicate and operate can prevent people from accessing support, even when that support may be available.

This is one of the issues we’ll explore during Beyond Equity Talk: Addressing Systemic Racism in Health.

The webinar will feature Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman, Professor Habib Naqvi, CEO of the NHS Race and Health Observatory in the UK, and World Wellness Group CEO and co-founder Rita Prasad-Ildes.

Together, they’ll examine how systemic racism shapes people’s experiences of healthcare and what needs to change to build more equitable and accountable health systems. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Ahead of our upcoming webinar Beyond Equity Talk: Addressing Systemic Racism in Health, Rodel who's the Project Officer for our Alcohol and Other Drugs program shares an example of what systemic racism can look like when someone seeks help.

A community member went to an Alcohol and Other Drug service but no one spoke his language, there were no translated resources, and assumptions were made about him based on his ethnicity rather than his experience, trauma and wellbeing.

He ultimately stopped attending counselling.

His experience shows why this webinar matters because the way a health service responds can affect whether someone feels understood, whether they trust the support being offered and whether they return.

On the 31st of August the discussion will bring together Australia's Race Discrimination Giridharan Sivaraman, Professor Habib Naqvi who's the CEO of the NHS Race and Health Observatory in the UK, along with our very own CEO and co-founder Rita Prasad-Ildes.

They'll discuss how systemic racism affects health outcomes and what is needed to create more accountable and equitable health systems. Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Thanks Caxton Community Legal Centre for inviting us to be be part of this important conversation about cultural rights at the Australian Elder Abuse Conference.

15% of older people in the Australian community experience elder abuse, mainly psychological, neglect & financial. This is a shameful statistic and we must do better.

At WWG we are often a first point of contact on elder abuse issues and through our partnership with Caxton Legal Centre via our Multicultural Advocacy & Legal Service are able access legal supports for our clients.

This is a hidden issue in multicultural communities on which we need to shine a light.

Racism in healthcare can be built into policies, processes and systems. This can affect access to care, whether people feel safe and heard, and the health outcomes communities experience.

Join us on 31 August for a free webinar exploring how systemic racism operates in health and what practical action can be taken to improve accountability and health outcomes.

The webinar runs from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

Last weekend, our team had the pleasure of joining the Queensland Naadam Festival and spending a wonderful day with the Mongolian community in Brisbane.

It was a great opportunity to meet so many people, have meaningful conversations, and share information about the free mental health and wellbeing support services available through World Wellness Group.

A big thank you to the Mongolian Community Association in Queensland (MCAQ) for inviting us and giving us the opportunity to be part of this special community event.

We're also excited to share that, from this year, members of the Mongolian community can access free mental health support in Mongolian. If you, a friend, or a family member would like support, we're here to help.
