I see this pattern so often in clinic.
People can arrive with what seems like a long list of unrelated symptoms — digestive issues, headaches, skin reactions, sinus problems, fatigue, sleep disturbance, anxiety, dizziness, food reactions or feeling increasingly sensitive to supplements and their environment.
It can feel overwhelming when you start to realise how many systems mast cells can influence.
But you don’t need to address the whole iceberg at once.
In practice, I find it’s often much more helpful to work gently and systematically: identify the biggest triggers, calm the nervous system, reduce the overall histamine and inflammatory load, support digestion and elimination, restore nutritional foundations, and then gradually address what may be driving the mast cell response.
And importantly, MCAS isn’t necessarily the whole story. Mast cell activation can be part of a bigger picture involving gut dysfunction, mould or other environmental exposures, infections, hormonal changes, nutrient deficiencies and nervous system dysregulation.
The aim isn’t to become frightened of more foods, supplements or environments.
It’s to understand why the body is reacting so strongly, reduce that load, and gradually build resilience again.
One layer at a time.
🧊 The MCAS Iceberg: what you see is only the tip.
🔬 Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) happens when mast cells, the immune cells that help defend the body, regulate inflammation and support healing, start releasing histamine and other inflammatory mediators in excess.
Because these cells live in nearly every tissue, the effects ripple across multiple systems at once.
🌊 Above the surface are the signs people recognise. But beneath it sits so much more, and that's exactly why MCAS is so often missed. Symptoms vary dramatically from person to person, they overlap with conditions like fibromyalgia, IBS, POTS, hypermobile EDS and Long COVID, and diagnostic criteria have historically been applied narrowly.
Some estimates suggest it could affect a meaningful slice of the population, yet many go years without answers.
💙 The path forward is personalised: identifying and reducing individual triggers, supporting mast cell stability, and building nervous system regulation and physical capacity over time.
✨ If this iceberg looks familiar, you're not imagining it, and you're not alone.
