How Can You Help A Child Understand Loss?

Children experience grief differently from adults. They may ask the same questions repeatedly, move between sadness and play, or struggle to express their feelings.

Being honest and using age-appropriate language is often the best approach.

Helpful tips include:
• Encourage questions
• Use simple explanations
• Maintain familiar routines
• Reassure them they are safe and loved
• Allow them to participate in remembrance activities

Remember that children may revisit their grief as they grow and gain a deeper understanding of loss.

Patience, love, and open communication can make a significant difference in helping a child navigate difficult emotions.

Planning Ahead Is One Of The Kindest Gifts You Can Leave Your Family

While funeral planning isn't always an easy topic to discuss, making arrangements in advance can provide peace of mind for everyone involved.

Pre-planning can:
✔ Reduce emotional stress on loved ones
✔ Ensure your wishes are respected
✔ Help avoid uncertainty during a difficult time
✔ Allow thoughtful decisions to be made without pressure

Even if you don't make formal arrangements, simply discussing your preferences with family can be incredibly valuable.

Many families tell us they found great comfort in knowing they were honouring the wishes of someone they loved.

Planning ahead isn't about focusing on the end of life—it's about helping those you care about most.

A Funeral Is More Than A Farewell

Funerals provide families and friends with an opportunity to come together, share memories, celebrate a life, and begin the healing process.

A meaningful service allows people to honour their loved one's achievements, values, and unique personality.

Many families find comfort in:
• Sharing stories
• Viewing photographs
• Listening to favourite songs
• Participating in personal tributes
• Gathering with family and friends

A funeral isn't only about saying goodbye. It's about acknowledging a life lived and ensuring that cherished memories continue to be shared for years to come.

Every life tells a story, and every story deserves to be remembered.

A Loved One Has Passed Away at Home – What Should You Do First?

Losing someone you love is never easy, and when a passing occurs at home, many families are unsure what steps to take next.

If the death was expected due to illness, contact the person's doctor who can advise on the next steps and complete the required documentation. If the doctor is unavailable, call 000, request an ambulance, the ambulance officer will complete a verification of death. If the death was unexpected, contact the police immediately.

Once the appropriate authorities have been notified, and
paperwork completed by either a doctor, ambulance officer or coroner a funeral director can assist with transferring your loved one into care and guide you through the process ahead.

One of the most important things to remember is that you do not have to do everything immediately. Take a moment, contact close family members, and allow yourself time to process what has happened.

During these difficult moments, having compassionate support can help ease some of the burden and provide clarity when it is needed most.

For guidance and support, Mackay Family Funerals is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Pre-Paid Funerals & Funeral Bonds

We offer a range of pre-paid funeral and funeral bond options, from a simple No Service, No Attendance Cremation through to a full cremation or burial service.
When arranging a pre-paid funeral or funeral bond, your funds are protected by law. Funeral companies cannot hold or use this money themselves. Instead, all funds are placed into a government-guaranteed scheme managed by a Trustee.
This means that Mackay Family Funerals cannot access your money before your passing. Your funds remain secure and protected regardless of what happens to our business, including in the unlikely event of insolvency.

What's the Difference Between a Pre-Paid Funeral and a Funeral Bond?

Pre-Paid Funeral
A pre-paid funeral is a contract with the funeral director that allows you to lock in the cost of your chosen funeral service at today's prices.
For example, if you arrange and pay for a pre-paid funeral in 2026 and do not require the service until 2056, the agreed funeral service will still be provided according to the terms of the contract at the price paid in 2026.

Funeral Bond
A funeral bond is an investment held in trust specifically to help cover future funeral expenses. The funds remain protected until they are needed at the time of your passing.
Funeral bonds can be particularly beneficial for people receiving or applying for the Age Pension, as eligible funeral bonds are generally exempt from Centrelink's assets test up to the allowable threshold. This can help reduce assessable assets while ensuring funds are set aside for future funeral costs.

To discuss a Pre-Paid Funeral or Funeral Bond, please contact Mackay Family Funerals to arrange a convenient appointment with one of our caring team members.
