Gurriny Yealamucka staff came together over a light lunch to recognise the sixth annual National Day of Recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners earlier today.

The gathering was an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the massive contribution our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners make every day in supporting the health and wellbeing of the Yarrabah community.

CEO Suzanne Andrews, respected and experienced Indigenous Health Worker Aunty Paula and Dr Jason each reflected on the vital role our GYSHAC Health Workers play in delivering culturally safe, compassionate care, advocating for community and helping our people navigate their health journey with trust, respect and understanding. โค๏ธ

This year's theme, "Many Paths, Many Ways," celebrates the diverse journeys that bring people into the profession and the many ways they continue to make a lasting difference through leadership, innovation, advocacy and everyday care.

It recognises that every Health Worker brings their own unique story, knowledge and lived experience, strengthening both the workforce and the communities they serve.

As Australia's only culturally based health workforce supported by national training and registration, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners play an essential role in bridging healthcare and culture, ensuring community remains at the centre of care.

To all of our dedicated GYHSAC Health Workers and Health Practitioners - thank you.

Over the next few days, our Cancer Care Program team members Chanten, Chantell and Thelessa will be out and about across the Yarrabah community, handing out bowel cancer screening kits and having friendly, culturally safe yarns with community members. ๐Ÿค

If you've got questions about the kit, how it works or why it's so important, don't be shy - stop and have a chat! Our team is here to listen, answer your questions and support you every step of the way. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, but when it's found early, it's also one of the most treatable.

We look forward to seeing you out in community over the coming days. Come over, say hello and have a yarn! ๐ŸŒฟ

A shoutout to our very own Tatiana Ah Kit, who recently presented at the Stronger Together: First Nations Health Equity & Workforce Forum at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, proudly showcasing Gurriny Yealamucka's "Building Our Own" Workforce Initiative. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Over two days, the forum brought together around 65 delegates from across Queensland, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, Hospital and Health Services, universities and key government partners, all united by a shared goal of strengthening the First Nations health workforce and advancing health equity. ๐Ÿค

Facilitated by Associate Professor Donald Whaleboat from James Cook University, the forum featured presentations spanning grassroots service delivery through to policy leadership, highlighting innovative, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led approaches to growing, supporting and retaining a strong and sustainable workforce.

Tatiana shared how GHYSAC is investing in the Yarrabah community through our "Building Our Own" Workforce Initiative, demonstrating the importance of creating meaningful pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to learn, grow and build rewarding careers close to home. ๐ŸŒฑ

The forum provided valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships and learn from organisations leading positive change across the sector - insights that will continue to support GYHSACโ€™s commitment to building a skilled, culturally strong workforce for the future.

Our Community and Wellbeing team and further staff members have just wrapped up six days of professional development with renowned Aboriginal psychologist Dr Tracy Westerman, taking part in workshops covering Indigenous Mental Health, Complex Racial Trauma, Attachment & Su***de Prevention, and Managing Cultural Load and Cultural Stress in the Workplace. ๐Ÿ‘

Throughout the past few days staff explored practical, culturally informed strategies to better support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental health challenges, while also reflecting on their own wellbeing and resilience.

The training focused on understanding cultural identity, recognising the impacts of trauma and racism, strengthening culturally safe practice, managing cultural load, preventing burnout, and developing practical self-care strategies that support both work and life.

Dr Westerman's unique approach - grounded in more than 25 years of experience working alongside Aboriginal communities - combined evidence-based psychology with cultural knowledge, challenging our staff to think differently while providing practical tools they can apply every day.

A big thank you to Dr Westerman for sharing her knowledge, wisdom and experience and congratulations to all of our staff who embraced this valuable learning opportunity. ๐Ÿ‘โœจ

A shoutout to Dr Sasha on successfully passing another major milestone in his GP training journey! ๐ŸŒŸ

Dr Sasha has now completed three of the four core assessments required to achieve ACRRM Fellowship standard as an independent Rural Generalist, with his most recent success coming in the multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) examination. โœ…

So far, Dr Sasha has successfully completed:
โœ”๏ธ Multi-Source Feedback.
โœ”๏ธ Case-Based Discussion.
โœ”๏ธ Multiple Choice Questionnaire. (MCQ)

His final core assessment, the structured assessment using multiple patient scenarios (STAMPS), is planned for November. ๐Ÿ’ช

Passing these core assessments marks the completion of the key GP training requirements before moving on to a year of Advanced Skills Training. We're delighted Dr Sasha is planning to undertake his Advanced Skills Training in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health right here at Gurriny Yealamucka next year. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

We're proud to support doctors like Dr Sasha as they continue to grow their skills and knowledge while providing high-quality, culturally safe care for the Yarrabah community.
