This week is Men’s Health Week - a chance for us all to reflect on how we can improve health outcomes for men across Australia.

And in case you were wondering why we need to take action to improve men’s health, here’s 10 surprising fact that highlight exactly why:

1. Men in Australia die 5 years younger than women on average. In 2023, the median age of death for men was 79.6 years, compared to 84.6 years for women.
2. Every day, 50 Australian men and boys die from preventable causes before the age of 75.
3. 9 people a day die by su***de, 7 males and 2 females on average, with men and boys accounting for 3 in 4 su***des.
4. Boys and young men are significantly over-represented in deaths of people aged 15-24 years old. 72.3% of people in this age group who die are male.
5. Heart disease is the leading killer of men in Australia, claiming the lives of more than 10,000 men (nearly 30 per day) in 2023.
6. While heart disease is the leading single killer of men in Australia, the combined total of male deaths from different types of cancers is nearly 3x higher than deaths from chronic heart disease.
7. Alcohol kills 3 men a day in Australia, with men accounting for 70.9% of alcohol-induced deaths in Australia.
8. Men and boys are 3x more likely to die in road deaths than women and girls.
9. Every two days a man loses his life at work. In 2023, there were 200 workplace fatalities in Australia with men accounting for 95% of these deaths.
10. The poorest 20% of men in Australia are 80% more likely to die than women from the same social background

The year was 2006 and it saw John Howard mark 10 years in office as Australian Prime Minister, the collapse of the Beaconsfield Mine and the first A-League Grand Final.

Closer to home, it also saw Kerrie Disney commence at YDHS and over the last 20 years, Kerrie has become an instrumental part of our welfare team.

Kerrie is currently our Senior Case Manager for Integrated Family Services and she’s incredibly passionate about improving the lives of those within our community that may need a little bit of extra assistance.

We know there’s many people out there within Yarram and surrounding communities, as well more widely within the region and beyond, that have benefitted from Kerrie’s care and compassion over the years. We see it on show every single day and she’s always going above and beyond to support those who need it most.

On behalf of all of us at YDHS, thank you for two incredible decades of service at YDHS Kerrie and congratulations on reaching this milestone.

A statement from YDHS CEO Paul Head:

Over the last 24 hours, commentary has been posted on local social media pages regarding the resignation of one of our GPs at the Yarram Medical Centre, who will be leaving to pursue the exciting next step in his medical career as he undertakes anaesthetic training.

As part of that commentary, some individuals have chosen to personally attack me and members of my family, levelling claims against them that are categorically false and defamatory.

I've always encouraged respectful discussion and debate regarding the work we do here at YDHS. Constructive criticism is part of any healthy community and we’re always looking for ways that we can continue to improve the high-quality, person-centred care we provide.

But personal vilification, harassment and defamation is unacceptable.

While I acknowledge these comments have come from a small handful of disgruntled community members, the consequences are far-reaching. Using social media to spread misinformation and poison public discourse inflicts real harm on real people - not just for me and my family but for all of our staff here at YDHS who work tirelessly everyday to provide the community with the high quality care they expect and deserve.

As CEO, I’m always filled with immense pride when I attend community events, or walk the corridors and hear about the wonderful care our staff have provided or how service upgrades have improved someone’s health or meant they can access care closer to home. To hear our staff’s work undermined through unfair or untrue negative and critical commentary is disappointing and undermines the significant progress we have made over the last five years.

When I arrived here in 2021, we had one doctor at the Yarram Medical Centre, our aged care facilities were at 50 per cent occupancy and we didn’t have a community care service. Over the last five years, we’ve increased our number of GPs to five, increased aged care occupancy substantially, are undertaking a significant expansion of our aged care facilities and are providing a broad range of community health services that allow people to remain living in their homes for longer.

The local community is often just as invested in the work we do and its success as the team here at YDHS is and we value that support greatly.

My ask here is simple - if you have legitimate concerns, raise them responsibly, with integrity and via the appropriate channels - your feedback makes our health service stronger and allows us to continuously improve.

But let’s also celebrate the wins we have every single day and acknowledge the incredible health service and facilities we have right here in Yarram and the wonderful people that provide the care so many of us rely on.

I’m sure people will say I’m biased, but I think it’s something pretty special.

We understand there has been some community interest regarding the recent resignation of one our GPs at the Yarram Medical Centre, including commentary on some local pages.

YDHS wishes to respond to this commentary here directly on our page.

Dr Joseph Folorunsho this week advised YDHS of his resignation to pursue his anaesthetic training.

While we're disappointed to lose a wonderful GP like Dr Folorunsho, we're incredibly pleased for him and wish him all the best as he pursues this exciting next step in his medical training and career.

We'd also like to extend our sincerest thanks to Dr Folorunsho for his service to YDHS and the local community over the last several years. He has been a valued member of the team here and will be missed by both our staff and his patients.

We have commenced a process to recruit an additional GP to the Yarram Medical Centre and will provide further information on this in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, appointments continue to be available with Dr Jhamb, Dr Samani, Dr Rathnayake and Dr Baloch.

Australia’s next Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026, with a count of people who are sleeping rough between the 10th and 16th August.

Applications for over 1,600 Community Field Officer jobs are now open, with roles commencing in July.

Some of these roles are targeted specifically to helping people who are experiencing homelessness participate in the Census, and the ABS is looking to recruit homelessness workers and people with lived experience into these roles. Field Officers work part time, during and after hours, for the weeks around the Census.

The ABS is looking for a range of people with experience working with:

- People living with disability
- People experiencing homelessness
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- Youth and older Australians.

These jobs are temporary, flexible and close to home. They suit a variety of schedules, from retirees with community service experience to part-time workers looking to earn extra money.

We’ve celebrated some incredible staff milestones in May, including our wonderful Community Nursing Manager Lindy Thunder who clocked up 20 years of service with YDHS.

Lindy joined the YDHS team two decades ago as an Enrolled Nurse, providing nursing services in our residential aged care and acute settings.

She later returned to study to become a Registered Nurse and shifted over into community nursing, where’s she’s managed this important local service since 2019.

Lindy’s an incredible asset to YDHS and we know that many in our community have benefitted from her service over the last two decades.

On behalf of all of us Lindy, thank you for your continued service and congratulations on reaching this significant milestone.

🚐 Mobile homelessness health support to visit Yarram tomorrow 🚐

Gippsland PHN's Health on Wheels will be visiting Yarram tomorrow between 11:30am and 1:30pm at the Grant St Back Carpark (behind Yarram Neighbourhood House).

Health on Wheels is a mobile outreach healthcare service supporting people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness across the East Gippsland and Wellington shires.

Homelessness in Gippsland continues to rise, and many people experiencing homelessness face complex health challenges and significant barriers to timely, coordinated and trauma-informed health care.

Health on Wheels has been designed to remove those barriers by bringing health care directly to people in the locations they already access, supporting earlier intervention and better health outcomes.

Delivered by Gippsland Lakes Complete Health, the service operates five days a week across Yarram, Sale, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost.

A registered nurse and homelessness support worker provide mobile outreach and community-based care through a fully equipped clinic on wheels, including:

🩺Health screening and pathology collection
🦠Wound care and chronic disease management
📄 Care coordination and referrals
💉 Needle and syringe program
💻 Digital health support, including access to online GPs, Virtual ED and specialist telehealth

By delivering care where people are, Health on Wheels is improving access, strengthening continuity of care and supporting more equitable health outcomes for people facing significant barriers to health care in Gippsland.

26/05/2026

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week - a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is ‘All In’ - a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

All In makes it clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

Reconciliation means listening, learning and taking action and at YDHS we’re committed to continuing this journey together.
