For many of us, maintaining a healthy weight can seem a never-ending pursuit, yet it's worth keeping in mind that the small changes we make add up.

For example, reducing our body weight by five or ten per cent may have the potential for short-term health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, improving blood cholesterol and stabilising blood sugar.

Thankfully the first few kilos are often the easiest to lose, and visceral or 'internal fat' is often the first to go.

Regular aerobic exercise such as brisk walking, swimming or cycling can help remove this fat and, in doing so, reduce our risk or delay the onset of developing heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

By breaking health objectives, such as a goal weight, down into achievable sections, little wins may motivate us along the way.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Yeppoon can help manage your weight loss goals in the context of your current health and provide referrals to allied health professionals to complement your efforts.

It is common knowledge that dairy, lean meat, poultry, and fish are protein sources, but what about vegetables?

Protein can come from fresh vegetables such as watercress, spinach and broccoli, but nuts and legumes like chickpeas and lentils are also good sources.

As the building blocks of life, protein is essential for the growth, development, repair, and maintenance of body tissues.

Incorporating these vegetables into our meals provides the bonus of carbohydrates and fibre for a balanced diet.

Also, when viewing protein relative to a food's calorie content, vegetable proteins are often lower than animal protein, for example, when comparing cheese to tofu.

In this sense, consuming protein from various sources may assist our general wellbeing, especially for those needing to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Yeppoon can provide a central point to manage ongoing health needs and assist those seeking improvements to their general wellbeing.

Understanding the minor injuries your GP can treat before they occur may ensure a more coordinated response to accidents and help to avoid unnecessary trips to the hospital emergency department.

Your doctor can provide treatment for various injuries, including bites and stings, sprains and strains, eye conditions and minor wounds, including removal of any stitches.

They can also assist in managing viruses, infections, symptoms such as vomiting, earaches, and headaches, along with long-term illness and injury.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Yeppoon can determine a course of action after an injury, with dedicated treatment facilities onsite to treat minor injuries and the ability to refer to allied health and specialist services.

For those requiring post-treatment care and management, your doctor can work with you and provide information regarding self-care once home and arrange medication through eScripts.

As sleep plays a crucial role in our health and wellbeing, it's good to know the amount to aim for that is appropriate for our age.

For the first three months, infants ideally require 14–17 hours, including naps.

Between 4 months and their first birthday, this decreases to 12–16 hours of sleep, and for one to two-year-old toddlers, 11–14 hours of rest applies.

For kids 3 and 5 years of age, the sleep time required is between 10 to 13 hours of sleep, while for 6 to 13-year-olds, the amount can decrease to 9 to 11 hours.

Older children between 14 to 17 years of age can aim for a range of 8 to 10 hours of sleep, and as they approach adulthood, 7 to 9 hours is an optimum amount of rest.

Regardless of the amount of sleep we have, the duration we achieve must be restful and restorative.

Seeking as many hours of sleep before midnight as possible is one way to make the most of our rest, as our bodies can tune into natural cues for rest time, such as temperature and light levels.

Whether needing help with your sleep habits or those of someone under your care, the doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Yeppoon can assess your needs and offer a course of action.

Your doctor may recommend referral to specialists and allied health services or arrange a sleep test to determine conditions such as sleep apnoea.
