๐Ÿ’š Feeling understood can make all the difference.

When someone is struggling with their mental health, being listened to without judgement and having their experiences taken seriously can be an important part of feeling supported.

In this story, our consumer shares what it meant to feel understood, supported and reassured during their time with Young Medicare Mental Health Centre.

Everyoneโ€™s experience is different, but no one should feel they have to work through things alone.

If youโ€™re aged 16 or over and would like mental health support, you can walk into Young Medicare Mental Health Centre - no referral or appointment needed.

๐Ÿ’™ A new place for support, connection and dignity in Young

Yesterday, we were pleased to join local services and community members for the official opening of the new Vinnies Drop-In Centre in Young, during Homelessness Week.

This new space is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when local services work together and continue advocating for the needs of our community.

For some time, representatives from services across Young have met regularly and recognised the need for something as basic, but incredibly important, as access to a shower for people experiencing homelessness or hardship.

The new Drop-In Centre delivers that, and so much more.

Located at 120 Lovell Street, the centre provides a welcoming and inclusive space where people can access:
๐Ÿšฟ Shower facilities
๐Ÿงบ Laundry facilities
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Meals and practical assistance
๐Ÿช‘ A safe, quiet place to sit and connect
๐Ÿค Support and connection with local services

Most importantly, it provides a place where people can feel welcome, supported and treated with dignity.

Young Medicare Mental Health Centre is proud to be part of a community where local organisations work collaboratively, share ideas and advocate together to improve support for people who need it most.

A huge congratulations to Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn and everyone who has contributed to bringing this important service to life. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’š Loneliness Awareness Week | 3โ€“9 August 2026

Loneliness can affect anyone, even people who seem busy, connected or surrounded by others.

This yearโ€™s theme, Make Room for Connection, reminds us that meaningful connection does not always happen by accident. Sometimes, we need to intentionally create space for it.

That might look like:
โ˜• Inviting someone for a cuppa
๐Ÿ“ฑ Sending a message to someone you havenโ€™t spoken to lately
๐Ÿ‘‹ Saying hello to a neighbour
๐Ÿ’ฌ Asking, โ€œHow are you really going?โ€ - and making time to listen
๐Ÿค Joining a local group, activity or community event

Small moments of connection can make a meaningful difference.

And if loneliness begins to affect your mental health, you do not have to manage it alone. Young Medicare Mental Health Centre provides free and confidential mental health support, with no referral or appointment required.

The Young Community Services Directory is now live! ๐ŸŽ‰

Young Medicare Mental Health Centre is excited to launch the Young Community Services Directory - a new online resource to help people find local services and supports across Young and the Hilltops community.

The directory brings together information about services that may be able to assist with things like mental health and wellbeing, housing, family support, financial and welfare assistance, legal support, community programs and more.

It has been created to make it easier for people to know what support is available locally, and how to access it.

You can explore the directory here:

๐ŸŒฟ International Day of Friendship ๐ŸŒฟ

Friendship can take many forms.

It might be the person who makes space for you to be yourself, the friend who notices when something feels different, or the familiar face who helps you feel connected to your community.

Strong relationships can support our wellbeing, but friendship is not about having all the answers. Sometimes, simply being present, sharing time together or offering a listening ear can mean more than we realise.

Today is an opportunity to appreciate the people who help us feel seen, valued and connected, and to be that person for someone else.

At Young Medicare Mental Health Centre, we are here when you need some extra support. Our service is free, confidential and available without a referral or appointment.

Birth Trauma Awareness Week

The impacts of birth-related trauma can extend far beyond physical health.

Birth-related trauma and injuries can affect mental wellbeing, relationships, parenting, social connection and confidence. For some people, these impacts may continue for years after birth and, in some cases, can be lifelong.

Importantly, the impacts can ripple outward to partners, children, families and communities.

If your birth experience was frightening, overwhelming, unsafe, or difficult to process afterwards, please know that your feelings are valid and you are not alone.

Young Medicare Mental Health Centre offers free mental health support in a safe and welcoming space. No referral is needed.

You can visit us at the centre or call 02 6453 4440.

This NAIDOC Week, Young Medicare Mental Health Centre recognises and celebrates 50 years of NAIDOC, honouring the strength, history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2026 theme, 50 Years of Deadly, is a powerful reminder of the ongoing legacy, leadership and resilience of First Nations communities.

We acknowledge the generations who have carried this movement forward, and celebrate the Elders, leaders, advocates, artists, families and communities who continue to shape the future.

Walking through the door for the first time can feel daunting - especially in a small country town where it can feel like everyone knows everyone.

In the first clip from our Consumer Stories campaign, one local community member shares what helped them feel safe, comfortable and supported at Young Medicare Mental Health Centre.

These stories are based on the lived experiences of our community, and remind us that seeking support can be the beginning of seeing your story differently.

Changing the way you see your story, one chapter at a time.
Begin again with Young Medicare Mental Health Centre.

Young Medicare Mental Health Centre is free, confidential, and no referral is needed.
