10 Years as a General Physician 🩺
Ten years. A whole decade as a general physician.
Ten years of early mornings, long days, missed family moments, cancelled plans, sleepless nights, difficult decisions, and sacrifices that most people never see. Ten years of carrying the weight of someone else’s pain while sometimes quietly carrying my own.
There have been beautiful moments — patients who recovered, babies whose journeys began under my care, grateful words that stayed with me, and people who reminded me why I chose this profession. There have also been heartbreaking cases, losses, difficult days, and, yes, patients who tested my patience, my boundaries, and every ounce of my energy.
There were days I felt appreciated and days I felt invisible. But regardless of the circumstances, the system, or the recognition, I kept showing up and giving my best. Because behind every consultation is a human being who deserves to be heard, cared for, and treated with compassion.
And I know I did not get here alone.
To my mother — thank you for being my constant source of love, strength, and encouragement. You have been there through every stage of my life, through the proud moments and the difficult ones, always believing in me even when I doubted myself. Thank you for the sacrifices you made and the countless ways you have supported me. Your love has been one of the greatest constants in my life, and I hope you know how deeply grateful I am for you.
To to my father, who is no longer here to see this milestone — this is for you too.
I wish you could have seen how far I have come. I wish I could tell you about the patients, the challenges, the victories, and the difficult days. I still wish I could hear your advice or simply have you here.
The strength, values, and resilience I carry today are, in part, because of you. Your presence shaped who I became, and your memory continues to guide me.
I hope I have made you proud, Dad.
To my partner — thank you for being my constant, my outlet, and my safe place. Thank you for listening, understanding, and reminding me that I am more than just a doctor. Your love and unwavering support have been an essential part of these ten years.
To my brother and sister — my foundation and my forever support system — there simply aren't enough words to express what you have meant to me. Thank you for being part of my journey, for the support, the laughter, the memories, and for reminding me that no matter how demanding life becomes, family will always be family. Thank you for being there in your own ways and for sharing both the ordinary moments and the milestones with me.
To my best friend and colleague — thank you for understanding the highs and lows of this profession, for the laughter, the conversations, the encouragement, and for simply getting it. Having you beside me has been one of the greatest gifts of this journey.
To my assistants & POH — thank you for being there through thick and thin. Your patience, dedication, hard work, and support have carried me through more days than you know. So much would not be possible without you.
And to my mother-in law and father-in-law — thank you for welcoming me into your family, for your kindness, encouragement, and support. I am truly grateful to have you both in my life.
After ten years, perhaps the greatest lesson is this:
A GP is also only human.
She has a family, responsibilities, emotions, exhaustion, dreams, bad days, and moments when she simply needs to breathe. She can care deeply for others while still needing to care for herself.
Ten years later, I’m proud — not because every day was easy, but because I kept going through the hard ones.
I’m grateful for every patient who trusted me, every lesson that shaped me, and every person who stood beside me and made this journey possible.
Here’s to 10 years of medicine. 10 years of learning. 10 years of sacrifice. 10 years of laughter and tears. 10 years of caring.
Still here. Still learning. Still caring. Still grateful. Still carrying those I love with me. Still human. ❤️🩺
