When I became a father to my daughter, more than 14 years ago, I was joyful that she and her mum were healthy and safe, but I also remember a whole jumble of emotions, including whether I could manage fatherhood.

This is what I wrote about in my Better Health column this month.

Fatherhood is beautiful, but it is also a major transition for men's mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.

Fathers need more than a Father's Day celebration; they need support and opportunities to learn and be human.

Taking care of fathers is also taking care of children and families 💙

Becoming an LGBTQ Affirming therapist 🏳️‍🌈

My Journey
I’ll be honest; I’ve had my own journey to becoming an affirming therapist to people who are gay, le***an, and bisexual. My awakening to my homophobia and bigotry started as a young adult; when I learned that someone close to me was gay.

Emotions are a natural part of being human. Rather than trying to suppress, avoid, or "fix" them, we can learn to understand them, make space for them, and respond in ways that support our well-being.

What emotion are you learning to navigate with more kindness today? 💚

Stress isn’t always a bad thing. 💭📚

In this clip, Dr. Nicole Lynch shares why experiencing manageable levels of stress is a normal and important part of growth and learning during her workshop, Helping Children Manage Exam Stress, held on May 26, 2026.

For children, some exam-related stress can be beneficial. It can motivate them to prepare, stay focused, and recognize the importance of studying and persevering through challenges.

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month let’s take some time to reflect on what self care means to each of us 💚

Self-care can look like giving yourself permission to engage with the small things that make you feel alive again: a hobby, a quiet moment knitting, a page from your favourite book, or just five minutes ensuring that you’re flowing while you do something you love.

What are some of the ways you give back to yourself? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I'd like to take this opportunity to appreciate my clients:

💚I appreciate the effort it can take to ask for support and to be vulnerable with another person, sometimes for the first time.

💚I appreciate the effort outside the therapy room, embracing small steps on the journey to trying again after setbacks.

💚I appreciate the trust because letting me see, hear, and feel the struggle, the conflict, the fear, the hurt is no small thing.

Thank you for letting me walk with you on the journey. You are appreciated. 💚

This Mental Health Awareness Month let's be reminded Couples therapy is not only for relationships in crisis. It is also for partners who want to understand their patterns, interrupt the patterns that hurt, and find safer, more vulnerable ways to reach for each other. Mental health is relational, too.
