🦋 Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are opposite thyroid states. In hyperthyroidism, the gland produces too much thyroid hormone, so the body speeds up and symptoms often include weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor, palpitations or tachycardia, and sometimes goiter. In hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone is too low, so body functions slow down, leading to fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, and a slower heart rate.
⚖️ The image captures the main contrast well: one side shows an overactive metabolism and the other shows a slowed metabolism. That said, these findings are not universal. Eye bulging is more typical of Graves disease rather than every case of hyperthyroidism, and goiter can occur in both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid disorders depending on the cause.
🩺 The key teaching point is simple: hyperthyroidism usually makes the body run “too fast,” while hypothyroidism makes it run “too slow.” Symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so the diagnosis is confirmed with thyroid function tests rather than symptoms alone.
