(Symptoms):
(Causes & Risk Factors):
𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙥𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙡 𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙚:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that causes numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and arm. It occurs when the median nerve—one of the major nerves to the hand—is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.
🟥Key Symptoms to Watch For
The symptoms of CTS usually start gradually and may include:
• Numbness or Tingling: You may feel a "pins and needles" sensation in your thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers. Interestingly, the pinky finger is usually unaffected.
• Nighttime Discomfort: Symptoms often flare up at night, sometimes waking you up. Many people feel the need to "shake out" their hands for relief.
• Weakness: You might notice a decrease in grip strength, making it difficult to perform fine tasks like buttoning a shirt or holding a steering wheel.
• Radiating Pain: A dull ache or sharp pain that can travel from the wrist up toward the elbow or shoulder.
🟧 Common Causes & Risk Factors
CTS is rarely caused by a single factor; it is often a combination of several:
1. Anatomy: Some individuals are born with a naturally smaller carpal tunnel, making nerve compression more likely.
2. Repetitive Hand Use: Prolonged or repeated flexing of the wrist (such as typing, assembly line work, or using vibrating tools) can aggravate the tendons and put pressure on the nerve.
3. Health Conditions: Chronic conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid imbalances are linked to an increased risk.
4. Hormonal Changes: Fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause can increase pressure within the tunnel.
5. Wrist Injuries: Past fractures or dislocations can alter the space within the carpal tunnel.
🟩Prevention and Management
If caught early, carpal tunnel symptoms can often be managed with simple adjustments:
• Take Frequent Breaks: If your job involves repetitive motion, rest your hands and stretch your wrists every 20–30 minutes.
• Check Your Ergonomics: Ensure your workstation is set up so that your wrists remain in a neutral (straight) position rather than tilted up or down.
• Wrist Splinting: Wearing a brace at night can keep the wrist straight while you sleep, preventing the nerve from being compressed.
• Exercises: Nerve gliding exercises and gentle stretches can help the median nerve move more freely.
🟦When to Seek Medical Advice?
If you experience persistent numbness that interferes with your sleep or daily activities, it is important to consult a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis is key to preventing permanent nerve damage and avoiding the need for surgical intervention.
