Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD ) বা অটিস্টিক বাচ্চাদের সেন্সরি প্রসেসিং ডিসঅর্ডার (SPD) থাকায় বাচ্চাদের মস্তিষ্ক প্রায়ই উদ্দীপনাকে হয় খুব বেশি (Hyper-responsive) অথবা খুব কম (Hypo-responsive) হিসেবে গ্রহণ করে।
ফলে রোগীদের সেন্সরি ইন্টিগ্রেশনের প্রয়োজন হয় । সেন্সরি ইন্টিগ্রেশনের মূল লক্ষ্য হলো মস্তিষ্ক যাতে বাহ্যিক উদ্দীপনাগুলোকে সঠিকভাবে গ্রহণ, প্রক্রিয়াকরণ এবং প্রতিক্রিয়া দেখাতে পারে।
প্রথাগত Sensory Integration (SI) থেরাপিতে সাধারণত দোলনা (swings), ব্রাশ করা (brushing), বা ভারি কম্বল (weighted blankets) ব্যবহার করা হয়। তবে আধুনিক নিউরোসাইন্স গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে যে, Bilateral Alternating Somatosensory Stimulation (BASS) সেন্সরি ইন্টিগ্রেশনের একটি অত্যন্ত সূক্ষ্ম আধুনিক এবং কার্যকর টুল। যা বাচ্চাদের কে সহজেই শান্ত করতে পারে এবং বাচ্চারা অতিরিক্ত শব্দ বা আলোতে কম বিচলিত হয়।
