HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY

Mama, if it feels like your chest is burning after eating or when you lie down, you’re not alone. Heartburn is very common during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters.

Here’s why it happens:
Pregnancy hormones relax the valve between your stomach and food pipe, allowing stomach acid to flow back up.

As your baby grows, your uterus puts more pressure on your stomach, making acid reflux more likely.

What you can do:

Eat smaller meals more often instead of large meals.

Avoid lying down for at least 2–3 hours after eating.

Sleep with your head and upper body slightly elevated.

Avoid foods that trigger your symptoms, such as spicy, oily, fried, or very acidic foods.

Wear loose-fitting clothing around your waist.

Drink fluids between meals rather than taking large amounts with meals.

When should you see your healthcare provider?

If the heartburn is severe or happens almost every day.

If you have difficulty swallowing.

If you vomit blood or notice black, tarry stools.

If over-the-counter remedies are not helping.

Heartburn may be uncomfortable, but it does not mean your baby is in danger. If lifestyle changes aren’t enough, your healthcare provider can recommend pregnancy-safe medications.
