(Varicose Vein):
(Overweight)
(Diagnosis):
(Duplex Scan):
(Treatment):
(Vein Surgery)
(Laser / Endovenous Treatment):
(Sclerotherapy):
(Post-operative Care):
(Complications):

Varicose Veins (Varicose Vein):
Varicose veins are a common but important condition affecting the veins of the legs. In this condition, the superficial veins beneath the skin become enlarged, swollen, and twisted or rope-like in appearance.
In the early stages, it usually causes only mild discomfort or light pain. However, if not treated on time, it may lead to complications later.
Why Do Varicose Veins Occur?
The veins in our legs are generally of two types- deep veins and superficial veins. Connecting these two systems are perforating veins that contain one-way valves. These valves help blood flow upward from the legs toward the heart.
If these valves become weak or damaged for any reason, blood begins to flow backward and accumulates inside the veins. This increases pressure within the veins.
As a result, the veins become swollen and twisted—this condition is known as varicose veins.
Who Is at Higher Risk of Developing Varicose Veins?
The risk of developing varicose veins is higher in the following groups:
✅ People with a family history (genetic predisposition) of vein problems
✅ Individuals who stand for long periods (e.g., traffic police, teachers, nurses, shopkeepers)
✅ Pregnant women
✅ Those with large abdominal tumors or increased abdominal pressure
✅ People who are overweight or obese
In many cases, reducing risk factors or addressing the underlying causes can help reduce symptoms.
Diagnosis of Varicose Veins:
Varicose veins are usually diagnosed through a physical examination. However, some important tests are performed to plan proper treatment.
➡️ Duplex Ultrasound Scan
This test evaluates blood flow within the veins, the condition of the veins, and the severity of the disease. It is a very important investigation for planning surgery or other treatment options.
➡️ Treatment of Varicose Veins:
The main treatment options include:
1. Surgery (Vein Surgery):
In this method, the affected veins are surgically removed. With modern techniques, the procedure can often be performed without putting the patient under full general anesthesia.
2. Laser / Endovenous Treatment:
Modern treatments use laser or radiofrequency energy to close the affected veins from inside. The benefits of this method include:
✅ Less pain
✅ Faster recovery
✅ Shorter hospital stay
3. Injection Therapy (Sclerotherapy):
For small to medium-sized varicose veins, a special medication (sclerosant) is injected into the vein to close it. In many cases, this can be done on an outpatient basis.
➡️ Post-operative Care
After surgery, patients can usually resume normal walking within 1–2 days. Important instructions include-
👉 Stitches are usually removed after 8–10 days
👉 Compression bandages or stockings should be used as advised by the doctor
👉 Regular follow-up visits must be maintained
👉 Heavy work or strenuous physical activity should be avoided for some time
➡️ Complications
If left untreated or delayed, the following complications may occur:
👉 Dark discoloration of the skin on the legs
👉 Chronic pain and swelling
👉 Development of ulcers (wounds)
👉 Sudden bleeding from affected veins
👉 Hardening of veins
➡️ Important Note
Even after treatment, varicose veins may recur. Therefore, lifestyle modifications and regular follow-up with a physician are very important after surgery.
➡️ Advice
Varicose veins are a completely treatable condition. With timely treatment and consultation with a vascular specialist, complications can be prevented and patients can return to a normal life.
