Remembering the Inauguration of National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, Sylhet facility
The Inauguration ceremony of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, Sylhet (NLFB Sylhet) was held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at its own premise, East Eidgah, Sylhet.
The present facility has been constructed by the Foundation with its own funding on land allocated by the Govt. of Bangladesh. The center will provide a government-approved laboratory, testing facilities and regular services from Hepatologists, Gastroenterologists and other physicians. The service will be at affordable cost and free for underprivileged patients.
The event was chaired over by Professor Mohammad Ali, Founder Secretary General of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh.
The Chief Guest was Khan Md. Rezaul Nabi, Divisional Commissioner, Sylhet, Special Guests were Prof. M. Anisur Rahman, former Head Dept. of Gastroenterology, BIRDEM General Hospital and Prof. Dr. Md. Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury, Principal, MAG Osmani Medical College.
Significant event was free Hepatitis B and C testing and Hepatitis B vaccinations for all residents of Govt. Shishu Paribar (Girls), Raynagar, Sylhet.
A special video message from Mr. Cary James, CEO of the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA), Geneva and Dr. John Ward, Director of the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination (CGHE), USA were displayed.
Professor Madhusudan Saha, Chairman of NLFB Sylhet and Head, Dept. of Gastroenterology, Sylhet Women’s Medical College delivered welcome address. Prof. Syed Alamgir Safwath, Secretary General, NLFB Sylhet and Head , Dept. of Gastroenterology, Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College outlined the NLFB Sylhet’s past activities, current services and future plans. Dr. Mustak Ahmed, Organizing Secretary, NLFB Sylhet and Associate Prof. Dept. of Gastroenterology Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College expressed gratitude to all participating physicians, medical students, journalists and representatives of various social and health organizations for joining and supporting this noble cause.
Zunaid Murshed Paiker, Chief Executive of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, presented an overview of past and present activities of the Foundation.
The event was attended by physicians, medical students, journalists and representatives from various social organizations.
The National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh is calling upon the Govt. of Bangladesh and respected nationals living home and abroad for their full support and cooperation in setting up this specialized hospital facility for liver diseases in Sylhet.
The program was hosted by Dr. Benjamin, the overall arrangements were managed by Shawkatur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer, NLFB Sylhet.

World Hepatitis Day 2026 Report
National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh (NLFB)

To commemorate World Hepatitis Day 2026, the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh (NLFB) implemented a nationwide awareness, advocacy and testing campaign under the global theme "Let's Break It Down."

Major Activities

• Free Hepatitis Screening Programme: NLFB organized free Hepatitis B (HBsAg), Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV), and Anti-HBs testing for students. Testing activities were conducted simultaneously at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College, Sylhet, Sylhet Women's Medical College, Daffodil International University, Dhaka and Nazneen High School & College, Dhaka. 1135 students got tested during the campaign.
• Policy-Level Advocacy: Prof. Mohammad Ali, Secretary General of NLFB handed over World Hepatitis Summit 2026 declaration copy and Open letter of Advocacy group of World Hepatitis Alliance to Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He also handed over a letter for accelerating hepatitis control in Bangladesh to achieve elimination 2023 goals.
• National Advocacy: A World Hepatitis Day message from the Honourable Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh focused to reinforce the importance of hepatitis prevention, support and Bangladesh's commitment to achieving the WHO goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.
• Public Awareness Campaign: Awareness messages on hepatitis prevention, testing, vaccination, and treatment were disseminated through social media and community engagement.
• Mass Media Engagement: Special television programs on ATN Bangla and News24 featured liver disease experts discussing hepatitis prevention, early detection and Bangladesh's progress towards the elimination of viral hepatitis.
• Print Media Advocacy: World Hepatitis Day articles of Prof. Mohammad Ali in Bangla and English were published in national dailies.
• Advocacy for ‘NOhep University’: NLFB held a coordination meeting with the management of Daffodil International University (DIU), Dhaka, to plan and advance the development of a hepatitis-free university campus (NOhep University, Bangladesh).
• Participation in a Roundtable: Prof. Mohammad Ali participated at a Roundtable discussion on viral hepatitis. It was attended by Deputy Director, Communicable Disease Control, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Government of Bangladesh among other distinguish participants.

Impact

• Viral hepatitis awareness program in five educational institute at Sylhet and Dhaka.
• Free Hepatitis B, hepatitis C and Anti-HBs testing among 1,135 students.
• Determination of Anti-HBs titers of medical and non-medical students will detect their immune status against hepatitis B. It will guide hepatitis B vaccination and other measures to boost up their hepatitis B immunity.
• More than 20 volunteers, including medical students and young advocates, supported the successful implementation of the campaign.
• The campaign reached thousands more people through television, newspapers and social media.

Through free screening services, public awareness initiatives, media engagement and national advocacy, the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to hepatitis prevention, testing and care, while accelerating national efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day 2026, the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh organized a free Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Anti-HBs testing program for the students of Daffodil International University, Ashulia, Dhaka on 29 July 2026.

The primary objective of the program was to raise awareness among students about viral hepatitis, facilitate the early detection of hepatitis infections and enhance their understanding of immunity against Hepatitis B through Anti-HBs testing.

Dr. A B M Alauddin Chowdhury. Professor & Head, Department of Public Health, Daffodil International University, along with other teachers and administrative officials of the university, attended the program and encouraged the students to participate.
