Is your child constantly in their own world? Or are they always on the move, talking a mile a minute, and unable to sit still?
As a clinical psychologist, parents ask me all the time: "๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ, ๐๐๐๐, ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ฌ๐?"
While some signs overlap, they are not the same thing. Here is how to understand the difference:
๐ง ๐๐๐๐: The child usually wants to socialize and make friends, but struggles with patience, impulse control, and attention. Sitting still is physically difficult for them. Their attention jumps rapidly from one topic to the next.
๐งฉ ๐๐๐ (๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ): The struggle is often around understanding social connection. Reading facial expressions, interpreting others' words, adjusting to routine changes, and handling sensory sensitivities are the main challenges. Instead of jumping topics, they often hyperfocus on a specific interest.
โ ๏ธ The Overlap: Some kids actually have both (AuDHD).
This is why comparing your child to others or relying on social media for a self-diagnosis, isn't the answer.
If you notice challenges with communication, behavior, attention, or social interactions, don't ignore it and don't panic. Early assessment and a professional diagnosis give you the exact roadmap needed to understand and support your child. ๐
