💪 Strength Training: More Than Just Building Muscles
A recent scientific statement from the American Heart Association, published in Circulation, reinforces an important message: resistance (strength) training is not only for athletes or bodybuilders—it is a key component of maintaining good health.
Research shows that regular strength training can:
✅ Improve muscle strength and physical function
✅ Help lower blood pressure
✅ Enhance cardiovascular health
✅ Reduce age-related muscle loss and frailty
✅ Improve quality of life and overall well-being
✅ Complement aerobic exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle
Examples of resistance exercises include:
• Weight training
• Resistance bands
• Body-weight exercises such as squats and push-ups
• Gym machines
Current recommendations suggest performing strength-training exercises involving the major muscle groups at least twice per week, in addition to regular aerobic activity.
For individuals with heart disease, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, or other chronic medical conditions, exercise programs should be individualized and discussed with a healthcare professional.
Exercise is medicine. While walking and aerobic activities remain important, maintaining muscle strength is equally essential for long-term health, independence, and healthy aging.
