add one thing to your life that you can come back to Krishna Das

There is no greater gift than having teachers on this path of life. We take refuge in our teachers, and the teachings they impart live in our hearts and inform our lives.
In the Ashtanga tradition, we learn by osmosis. We sit near, observe, and serve the teacher, until eventually the practice blossoms from within. The teacher quietly observes and guides the process in the most subtle way. It is a learning process that is beyond the mind, and born from love.

It is hard to find teachers who embody the practice in all aspects of their lives β€” who dedicate their lives to extending their own experience to others, so that as many people as possible may also benefit from it. It may start as love for one's teacher/Guru, but eventually that love breaks the heart open, and turns into a love that wants to reach all beings everywhere. To witness that is quite magnificent. It takes an enormous amount of love, dedication, courage, and fierce faith.

We are lucky for these beings. May we all find good teachers on the path, be it in the form of a human body, or a community or the essence of a being through their writing. May we be guided to the truth.

If you don't look you don't see - Krishna Das

We are all just walking each other home.

πŸͺ·

It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work,

and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.

New stream of practice starting
October 13th

Something has been stirring in me for a while now, so I'm going to give something new a try this fall.

Starting October 13, I'll be opening up some of my personal practices to share in community. I offer this as a way to add depth to our journey as a community, and to keep evolving together on the path as practitioners.

May we grow steady in body and mind, find inner peace, and let that serve not only ourselves but everyone we meet. May we be beams of light at a time when darkness is so evident β€” we come together to enhance the light.

Starting the week of October 13th, three new offerings join our weekly rhythm. Offered both in person NEWBURGH YOGA SHALA and online through our platform.

πŸ•‰οΈ Bhakti: Hanuman Chalisa β€” Tuesdays, 11:00–11:30am
A devotional chant, sung together, in praise of courage and selfless service.

πŸŒ… Gayatri Upasana β€” Fridays, 11:00–11:30am
One of the oldest Vede mantras wrapped up in a practice that includes: pranayama, japa & meditation β€” a way of sitting close to something sacred and to gain clarity on our life path.

πŸ“– Philosophy Hour β€” last Saturday of the month, 12–1pm
Setting the mat aside once a month to sit with the texts that shape how we live, not just how we move.

No experience required for any of it β€” just curiosity, and a willingness to show up.

10% of all donations will go towards a local or international cause.

Come as you are. I'd love for you to join me in person or online. πŸ™

Registration is already open. Message me for details

A little introduction to the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra which I'll be sharing in our upcoming fall retreat Menla & Dewa Spa

Whether you are interested in joining us or not, I hope you enjoy listening and gain a little curiosity towards this practice of reciting mantra.

This tradition of the Veda, which I have the great honor to learn from my teacher Shantala Ramaiah of Veda Studies , has brought such tremendous growth and maturity to my human evolution. I can't help but wishing for all beings to join the path.

It is a joy to share little bits of it.

If you are interested in learning more about the retreat please find the link in the bio and reach out :) we have a few spots left!

12 years ago. Some things don't change β€” they just deepen.

I can't remember if it was David Nichtern or Nina Rao who said this during the Ram Dass Summer Mountain Legacy Retreat this past weekend, but the wisdom is worth contemplating and remembering.

A simple metaphor that suggests to see practice as a well, and recommends to not dig too many shallow wells, but rather just dig one deep well.

In my experience when we commit to doing one practice while heartedly, it inevitably opens up into a wider practice that encompasses more limbs and leads to new teachings without leaving the mother teaching but rather deeping it. The practice of yoga is 8 limbed, we must begin somewhere.

The other thing I have learned is that curiosity and an open mind help along the way. Approaching all that arises with love, care, curiosity and generosity. To never force but rather offer ...time, inquiry, patience, gratitude, faith - to name a few

Inevitably the well will deepen, and the love will grow ❀️

This picture was taken by a dear friend - Amal Momo Dags who is now also beginning to teach - during a beautiful retreat we used to hold yearly thanks to Julianna Takacs at The Abode , called the yoga hoedown. This picture is from 2014 with Deborah Claire Bagg and Paul Weinfield

One thing we can rely on is that everything always changes. Anything that has a beginning inevitably has an end. This is a lesson we learn in many places in practice - and across all practices - Asana, chanting, meditation...

One of the reasons I love the Mysore room, both practicing in and teaching within it, is that it provides a place of steadiness, so profound so reliable that it serves an anchor, a place of comfort as we navigate dealing with the impermanence of life. Whatever is going on, the room is always there, just like our breath. Whatever is going on Sangha is there. This practice of ashtanga yoga is so rich.

Just like the Mysore room, mantra provides this place of refuge, this learning ground we can always rely on, rest within and take a shelter in.

I find so much similarity within the ashtanga practice and Veda chanting. The rigorous attention they require, the lineage container, the opportunity to remain present...

Thank you Loving Awareness Summer Camp for another lovely experience.

The love was palpable. This summer has been filled with so many opportunities to remember the power of community. I've had the great honor of being in several different settings across different lineages, and the shared core value in every one of them is love.
I know it may sound corny β€” but when we strip everything down to its essence, what's left is consciousness.

Consciousness recognizing itself can create a sense of I-ness, but if we hold that within a container of remembering that we are, at the core, one thing β€” then we can remember love. I-ness ceases, even if only momentarily. And when it does, we can view another from a place of unity, of togetherness, of shared humanity, of compassion.

It's easy to experience this in the containers we call retreats. But hopefully, the more we practice it in these spaces β€” noticing the judgements we may carry when we walk in, and watching them fall away as recognition and shared humanity take over β€” the more we can bring that into daily life. We can start to notice when we're judging another and offer ourselves a pause, a curiosity, a sense of wonder toward what we dislike in others. And then act from that more spacious place.

A tall order. But we just keep trying. πŸ™

A beautiful weekend held by the lush nature of the The Abode surrounded by a loving community, and sharing teachings.

Thank you Caravan of Love for inviting Yoga into your practices.

There is so much nourishment we can find we live in community, when we extend a loving hand towards other fellow humans.

The cure to all ailments - Connectivity, slowing down, mindfulness and mother Earth.

Our first July in the Hudson Valley. A wonderful balance of teaching, family and friends.

"And that transformation, which is called the spiritual path, happens often almost in spite of ourselves. It’s as if once the door has even a crack in it, and a little teeny bit of light comes through, you get hooked, and you almost find you can’t get away." From Ram Dass sub stack

Some invitations aren't about doing more. They're about coming back to yourself.

This October, Alex Tse and I (Bibi Lorenzetti) are leading a four day retreat at Menla β€” Mysore-style Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Yin by day, workshops, chanting and stillness by night. All levels welcome. You don't need experience in practice, just an enthusiastic curiousity to learn.

At the center of our time together is the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra β€” one of the most ancient verses in the Vedic tradition, an invocation to Shiva for healing, protection, and liberation.

We'll study it word by word, chant it together, and let Kriya β€” the inner practice of breath and stillness β€” carry its meaning inward. Sound and silence. Invocation and surrender.

Two practices a day. One daily workshop. Kirtan every evening, with some special guests we're working to bring in.

Vegetarian meals you didn't have to plan or clean up after. Time in nature, on land blessed by the Dalai Lama himself. And a small group of people doing the same quiet, unglamorous work you are.

Four days is enough to come back different.
