Dancer Pose (Natarajasana)
Isn’t she lovely?!
Dancer Pose is a graceful, standing balancing backbend that builds focus, core stability & openness in the front body, shoulders & hips.
1. Start in Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand tall with your feet grounded firmly into the floor. Find a steady point of focus (drishti) on the floor ahead of you.
2. Shift Your Weight: Ground ⬇️ through your right foot & engage your right quadriceps to keep the standing leg strong & stable.
3. Catch the Foot: Bend your left knee & bring your left heel toward your 🍑. Reach your left hand back to grab the inside or outside of your left foot or ankle (keeping your elbow pointing back).
4. Extend the Opposite Arm: Reach your right arm straight up toward the ceiling, keeping your palm facing inward or forward to lengthen your spine.
5. Press and Hinge: Inhale to lift your chest, and as you exhale, begin to press your left foot up & back into your hand. Simultaneously, hinge slightly forward from the hips, letting your torso counter-balance the weight of the leg.
6. Find the Expression: Allow your lifted leg to rise as high as comfortable while keeping your hips relatively square to the front of the mat. Keep your chest open & your breath steady.
7. Release: Hold for 5 to 8 breaths, then slowly release to return to Mountain Pose. Repeat on the opposite side.
Benefits:
Strengthens: Ankles, legs, core & back
Stretches: Shoulders, chest, abdomen & the front of the thighs/ hip flexors
Improves: Balance, posture & concentration.
Modifications~
Use a Wall: If balance is a challenge, lightly place your right hand against a wall for support instead of reaching it straight up.
Use a Strap: If you can’t comfortably reach your foot, loop a yoga strap around your left ankle & hold the ends of the strap with your hand to bridge the distance.
Keep Knees Parallel: As you press the foot back, try to prevent your lifted knee from splaying out to the side; keep it tracking straight back behind you😉
