Honored to have met Mr. Simon Gronowski at the award ceremony of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) – Faculté de Droit et de Criminologie, where he received the 2025 Faculty Prize as an ULB alumnus.
As a child, Mr. Gronowski escaped a deportation train during the Holocaust. These events shaped the course of his life. He went on to become a doctor of law, a lawyer at the Brussels bar, and a jazz pianist; a trajectory marked by resilience.
Today, as one of the last living witnesses of the Holocaust, he feels a clear responsibility to keep telling his story to younger generations, so that the injustice of that period is never forgotten and repeated.
What stands out is how he chooses to do so: without bitterness, without anger. Instead, with a message of peace, courage, and friendship. He opposes antisemitism through positivity and dialogue. And in today’s context, his voice feels more necessary than ever.
We are proud to have cast in bronze the artwork “Truth can set you free” by Delphine von Sachsen-Cobourg , which serves as the official ULB Faculty Prize, awarded to Mr. Simon Gronowski in recognition of his life’s work.
Thank you to Patrick Mandou and the faculty staff for the smooth collaboration on this project.
